Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Knights Score Eight Unanswered in Win at RPI

Troy, NY – Finding itself constantly skating down a player to create a three-goal deficit early on, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team channeled the frustration into its offense, scoring seven goals in a 14-minute stretch en route to an 8-3 ECAC Hockey win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Friday evening.

The Golden Knights, ranked seventh in the latest poll, improved to 17-5-1 overall and 8-3-0 in ECAC Hockey, while the Engineers dropped to 11-10-2 and 4-7-1. Clarkson continues the weekend trek when it takes on Union College on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson controlled play in the early going with a hefty advantage in shots, though it began to go more in Rensselaer's way when the Engineers went on the power play. Although the Engineers would come up empty while up a skater, the offense kept churning to keep the puck in the Clarkson defensive end. It appeared as if RPI would lose possession of the puck when it was poked away into the slot, but it slid beneath the sticks of two Clarkson defenders. It proved costly, though, with a pass from behind the net finding Audrey McCutchen, who skated in to the bottom of the left circle and went top shelf to the opposite post, putting RPI up 1-0 at 11:58.

In the final minute, the officials began blowing their whistle on anything wearing Green and Gold, as the team had four skaters in the penalty box at once. Clarkson was called for more penalties in the first period against the Engineers than it had called against them in any single game in 2024-25. Fortunately for the Knights, no goals were scored in the final two-and-a-half minutes, but the Knights began the second on the short end of a lengthy 5-on-3.

RPI picked up two on the power play in the opening two minutes of the second period, getting one on a 5-on-3 from Andrea Trnkova when she wristed one in from the middle of the slot, and then Morgan Skoda tipped one in while the Knights were still skating with just four players.

Back playing even, it didn't take too long for the Knights to get on the scoreboard, and the irritated Knights took over with five goals in a stretch of less than 12 minutes. The Knights created a 4-on-2 when the Engineers had two players slip in the Clarkson defensive end while racing for the puck. The odd-player rush worked out well for the Knights, as Shelby Laidlaw took a shot from the middle of the right circle, going high over the shoulders of Reese Keating at 8:53. Clarkson picked up another goal three minutes later when Jenna Goodwin took a rebound and scored on a wrap-around.

Clarkson tied the game less than two minutes later off a quick transition. Although the puck ended up down by the boards, Rhea Hicks had possession on the left circle, walked around a defender and flipped a pass to Sena Catterall at the opposite post, tying the game at 13:35. Another three minutes later the Knights found themselves on top. A quick breakout in the other direction went from Hicks behind the net to Nicole Gosling at the top of the left circle. One more quick pass to Haley Winn at the point allowed the senior to send a wrist shot on the cage and make it 4-3. The Knights were not done, however, as Anne Cherkowski had an impressive tip in from outside of the crease. A high flip form Hicks was handled by Cherkowski near her hip, sending the puck into the net when it hit the blade near the shaft with less than a minute to go in the second.

The second intermission did not slow Clarkson's offense as the Green and Gold buried another puck in the net just a minute into the third. Jenna Goodwin rifled a shot in off a short pass Raedyn Spademan just 55 seconds for the Knights' sixth unanswered goal. Clarkson continued to throttle the Engineers with its offense, all but putting the game away when Sidney Fess flipped in the puck off a scrum in front at 3:15 in the third.

After seven even-strength goals, the Knights took advantage of a power play. Working the puck around unencumbered, Nicole Gosling found herself at the top of the slot with plenty of time to pick her spot, wristing a hard shot through traffic at 7:59.

Clarkson finished the game with a 41-15 edge in shots on goal and an 80-26 margin in total shots. Each team had one score on the power play. Adreanna Doucette made 12 saves for the Knights and Reese Keating denied 33 shots for the Engineers.
