Knights Come Up Short Against William Smith

Potsdam, NY – Timely runs turned out to be the difference on Saturday afternoon, as the Clarkson University Volleyball team suffered a three-set sweep at the hands of William Smith, 25-15, 25-17, 25-21.

The Golden Knights dropped to 4-10 on the season and 0-2 in conference games, while William Smith won its eighth straight to move to 11-2 and 2-0. Clarkson looks to get into the win column next Friday at Vassar College before playing two non-league matches on Saturday.

The Herons got off to a solid start with the first four points of set number one and eventually led by a score of 11-3. However, the Knights rallied back to within three (12-9) and eventually were down just two (15-13) near the midway point of the set. From that point on, however, it was all William Smith, as the visitors scored 10 of the next 12 points, capped off by kills from Arielle Newsome, Marin Montagne, and Jaylynn McCarthy. The Herons hit .342 in the set.

William Smith would not have the same level of success on offense the rest of the match, hitting a combined .117 over the final two sets. However, that was enough to keep Clarkson at a safe distance. In the second set, Clarkson held an early 3-2 lead, but William Smith went kill, ace, kill, ace, kill to regain the advantage. The Knights pulled back to within one near the midway point and trailed by just two at 13-11. Again, the Herons went on a run, scoring six straight for a healthy margin. They would also score four of the last five to claim an eight-point win.

The third set was particularly streaky for both squads. The Knights trailed by just one (7-6), only to see the Herons roll off eight straight, ending on a kill from Marin Montagne. The lead would expand to nine, only to see Clarkson go on a run of its own, scoring eight of nine to pull the set back within two and make a fourth set possible. Clarkson stayed within two (20-18), but a service error, an ace and consecutive kills put the Herons on the precipice of the victory. Clarkson would hold William Smith off for the next three, thanks to a pair of kills from Tess Sorel, but McCarthy ended things with a kill in the middle.

Marin Hangliter led Clarkson with six kills and 10 digs, while Grace Hanson also chipped in five kills. Ashley Currier had 12 assists and seven digs. Abigail Spector (14 digs) and Olivia Baxter (11 digs) led the Knights in the back row.

For the Herons, McCarthy went 14-2-24 for a .500 hitting percentage. Malya Sayre was held under her normal offensive output, but still posted a strong line with 19 digs, 8 kills, 5 assists, 3 aces, and 2 blocks. Delainy Williams ran the offense with 34 assists and Kali Vanderhoof contributed 19 digs.
