Knights Drop Pair in Washington

Walla Walla, WA – Following up a split on day one on the West Coast, the Clarkson University Volleyball team couldn't get much going on day two of the Whit Classic, falling to UC Santa Cruz in four (19-25, 21-25, 25-21, 22-25) and in three straight to Whitworth University (13-25, 12-25, 19-25) on Saturday.

The Golden Knights moved to 1-3 after the opening weekend, but will be back in familiar territory next weekend when the team hosts Hartwick College and Oswego State.

In the opening set against the Banana Slugs, Clarkson led for most of the early going and was the first to the midway point. However, Clarkson's offense stalled at 14-12 as the Slugs scored eight of the next 10 points. The Knights rallied with a kill, ace, and block, but Santa Cruz recorded four kills in the final six points to close out the set.

Set two again saw Clarkson up early, but the Slugs scored five straight to take the lead at 9-8. Santa Cruz would lead by five on a few occasions near the midway point of the set and kept the Knights at a safe distance for the remainder of the game despite Clarkson's late rally in the game.

In the third, Clarkson never trailed, scoring the first three points and allowing the Slugs to come back to tie the set just once at 3-3. Not surprisingly, Clarkson's offense was at its best in the third set, striking for 12 kills against just two attack errors in 42 swings for a .239 hitting percentage. The fourth game saw both teams make plenty of mistakes on offense as the two combined for 17 hitting errors. Like the first two games, both teams were streaky, with Clarkson scoring the opening four but quickly finding itself trailing. The Slugs built a six-point lead (17-11) and expanded it to seven a few moments later. Clarkson had a last gasp, winning six points out of seven late in the game, helped by a pair of kills from Ashley Currier, but the margin was too much to overcome so late.

Anna Mayer had a double-double thanks to 22 assists and 10 digs, while Ashley Currier contributed 13 assists, 11 digs, and six kills. Grace Hanson notched 12 kills and Allyson Treichel and Marin Hangliter each posted eight kills. Abigail Spector contributed 16 digs and Olivia Baxter picked up 14 digs.

Little went right for the Knights in the second match of the day, as the fourth match in a small stretch of time combined with the lengthy travel likely took its toll. Clarkson struggled on offense against Whitworth, striking for just 18 kills against 25 attack error, which included 10 blocks for the opposition. On the other side of the net Whitworth did just enough offensively (39-17-135, .163) to claim the win.

Ashley Currier recorded 10 assists and 11 digs and Abigail Spector matched her dig total with 11 as well.
