Knights Clinch Final Playoff Spot in Liberty League Tournament With 12-5 Win At Vassar

Poughkeepsie, NY - Behind an 18-save effort by goalkeeper Griffin Emerson, the Clarkson Univeristy Men's Lacrosse team secured the final playoff spot in the conference tournament, claiming a 12-5 Liberty League victory over Vassar College on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson's win, which evened the team's overall record at 8-8, coupled with a Skidmore loss to Ithaca, allowed the Knights to take the final playoff spot. The Golden Knights will take on fourth-seeded Union College on Tuesday in the Liberty League's First Round game.

The Knights never trailed in Saturday's contest thanks to an outstanding overall defensive effort. Andrew Kearney scored just 27 seconds into the game and Alex Seiler scored roughly four minutes later to give the Knights an early 2-0 lead. Though Vassar scored midway through the period, the Brewers would score only once more in the next 38 minutes of game time. Vassar scored once at the end of the second quarter and was held scoreless until early in the fourth quarter as Clarkson slowly built its lead.

The Knights found the back of the net four times in the second quarter, including twice while on the man-up when Sebastian Geiger was helped by assists from Andrew Kearney and Robert Fox. Both teams were without a goal in the third, but Clarkson scored three in the first six minutes of the fourth period to build a 10-3 lead. By that point, the Knights' defense had shown more than enough ability to keep Vassar's offense quiet, and despite two goals midway through the fourth, the Knights had plenty of breathing room.

Emerson made 18 saves while Matt Szwagulinski had eight groundballs and caused two turnovers for Clarkson. Vassar actually had a 39-31 edge in shots and a 23-18 advantage in shots on goal.

Andrew Kearney scored five points on four goals and an assist, while Matt Reilly (2-1-3), Geiger (3-0-3), and Seilser (1-2-3) contributed three points. For Vassar, Drew Quinn had six saves in the crease.
