Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Guay's Goal In Double Overtime Lifts Knights Past Princeton, 3-2

Potsdam, NY – Graduate student Alexie Guay knocked in a rebound in double overtime to help lead the third-ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team to a 3-2 victory against Princeton University in the opening game of the best-of-three ECAC Quarterfinals series on Friday night at Cheel Arena.

The ECAC's second seed in its postseason tournament, the Golden Knights improved to 30-3-2 on the year, hitting the 30-win mark for the sixth time in program history, with all six coming in the past 11 seasons. Seventh-seeded Princeton fell to 14-11-6 on the year. The two teams will match up for game two of the series at 3:00 pm on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson netted the game-winner in the second overtime after just missing twice in the opening minute. A long shift in the Princeton end resulted in the score, as Clarkson was able to allow just one Tigers player to leave the ice in a stretch of nearly 90 seconds. The puck left the zone briefly for one defender to jump out, but Clarkson held the puck in the Princeton zone for the next minute. Sena Catterall wouldn't allow the puck to get cleared, stealing the puck near the right wall and creating a short 4-on-3. Catterall took a shot, which was stopped in front, but the rebound found the stick of Guay in the slot just outside the crease, and she flicked the shot through at 6:32 in the second overtime. It was Guay's third game-winning goal of the year, but the first that came in a close contest.

The game started off with the two teams feeling one another out in the early going with a handful of shots, but the best scoring chance early on came when Anne Cherkowski was stopped by Princeton goaltender Jennifer Olnowich on a short shot in the slot near the midway point of the opening period. However, just a few minutes later, the Golden Knights would get on the scoreboard thanks to a solid effort from Jenna Goodwin. The junior forward stole the puck behind the Princeton net and sent a pass over to Brooke McQuigge on the other side. One defender went to McQuigge while the other cycled back in front, but that left Goodwin alone on the return pass, and once she achieved a better shooting angle, she was able to lift a shot just over the left shoulder of Olnowich.

On the ensuing faceoff, Clarkson was called for an elbowing penalty that gave the Tigers a power-play opportunity. Princeton took advantage, scoring early on while up a skater. Issy Wunder and Gabby Kim combined to set the offense, locating Sarah Paul. Paul had recently blasted a slap shot that was saved, but this time she faked a one-timer to get the defense to commit, and followed up with a wrist shot to tie the score 1-1.

The second period was filled with opportunities for both teams, but only Princeton cashed in. Sarah Fillier was stopped on a breakaway in the first minute of the period thanks to a diving stick check from Nicole Gosling which was just enough to get Fillier off her skating rhythm. After that, the next five minutes was all Clarkson as the team put a flurry of shots on goal. The next stretch went Princeton's way as the team hit the post on a couple of occasions. One of those turned out to be a benefit for the Tigers, as the initial shot hit the left post and bounced all the way out to Kate Monihan at the top of the right circle, and Monihan wristed a shot through the Clarkson defense that was trying to reset after the post.

The third period was reasonably quiet, though both teams had a chance on the power play. Clarkson went up a skater when a hooking penalty was called in the first minute, but the Knights never got a shot through the Princeton defense as all three attempts were blocked. Princeton had a golden opportunity when Clarkson was whistled for two tripping penalties in a stretch of 44 seconds. For 75 seconds, the Knights played tremendous defense as Princeton was only able to get one or two decent shots on the goal while up 5-on-3. When one player was released, the defense got even better, and Clarkson's nation-leading penalty kill displayed its excellence.

Clarkson was able to tie the game late in the contest thanks to an extra attacker. In the final two minutes, Clarkson gained possession in its own defensive end to get the offense rolling. Once the Knights cleared the zone, Michelle Pasiechnyk raced to the bench for another skater on offense and the Green and Gold quickly made the strategy work. Haley Winn kept the puck in the zone and passed the puck across ice to Nicole Gosling. The assistant captain wasted little time in putting a shot on net and utilized a screen from Dominique Petrie, as the puck snuck through to tie the game with less than 90 seconds on the clock.

Both teams had their chances in the first overtime as well. Princeton was already celebrating when a shot slipped past Pasiechnyk, only to see the shot bang off the inside part of the post and eventually get cleared. A few moments later, a loose puck sat on the doorstep at the other end, but it bounded out of harm's way to help keep the game tied at 2-2 through 80 minutes, setting up Guay's heroics in the second extra session.
