Lavarnway Has Hand in Half of Team's Goals as Clarkson Opens 2024 with 18-10 Win Over Oswego State

Potsdam, NY – Graduate student Julia Lavarnway came within two of tying her career-high for points in a game, registering two goals and seven assists for nine points, as the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team opened its 2024 season with an 18-10 victory over Oswego State on Tuesday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights won't have much time for rest, with the team heading to Brockport for another matchup against a SUNYAC foe on Thursday. Oswego State dropped to 1-1 on the year.

Oswego State scored in the first 30 seconds of the game to take an early lead, but Lavarnway connected with Kaitlyn McNamara and Grace Graney in the next three minutes and the Knights never trailed again. Clarkson would relinquish the lead briefly as Oswego tied the game midway through the first, but a Brooklynne Perrigo goal at 5:46 while the Knights were up a player put Clarkson ahead for good. It was the first of four player-up goals that Clarkson would record in the game, with three coming in the second half.

Clarkson steadily increased its lead throughout the contest, winning each quarter by multiple goals until the fourth when the Knights only finished up 4-3. In the final 15 minutes.

Lavarnway led all scorers with nine points on two goals and seven assists, finding four different teammates for goals, including Madelynn Barnum on four occasions. Barnum finished with six goals overall to go along with six draw controls and four groundballs. Freshman Gabby Cranfield enjoyed a solid first outing at the collegiate level, scoring a goal and assisting on three others, and Hailey Millington recorded three goals and four draws. Grace Graney (1-1-2), Makenna Cassin (2-0-2), and Brooklynne Perrigo (2-0-2) also had multiple points in the contest. Maeve Bartell tied for the team lead with four groundballs and Rylee Ganter had three caused turnovers, two draws, and two groundballs.

For Oswego State, Sela Wiley scored three goals and had seven draws, two caused turnovers, and three groundballs. Madison Davis also chipped in three points (2-1-3) while Julia Quirk had two goals, three groundballs, and caused two turnovers. Sophie Ruschin also had three caused turnovers and six draws in the game.

Clarkson finished with a 34-24 edge in shots and a 26-18 lead in shots on goal. Jennaca McGill picked up the win for the Knights, recording seven saves on 14 shots on goal through the first three quarters. Clare Tucker had one save in 8:35 to start the fourth and Riley Donovan played out the final 6:25 with no saves. For Oswego State, Sarah Kamide notched eight saves and also had five groundballs.
