Clarkson Holds Off Union in Third for 4-1 Win

Schenectady, NY – Despite spending nearly eight minutes down at least one skater in the third period, the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team kept Union College's offense down in a 4-1 win for the Golden Knights at Messa Rink.

The Green and Gold improved to 8-3-1 overall and 2-0-0 in ECAC Hockey, while Union fell to 7-3-1 and 3-1-0. Clarkson hosts Brown and Yale next weekend at Cheel Arena.

Both teams jumped on the scoreboard early as each team found the back of the net less than five minutes after the first puck drop. Clarkson tallied first as the puck worked its way from the corner to the right point for Tate Taylor. His wrist shot from just inside the blue line was denied by the Union defense, but Ayrton Martino was there for the rebound put back, going around the stick side of Kyle Chauvette at the 3:00 mark.

Union quickly responded, scoring only 76 seconds later. Josh Nixon took a hard shot from the left side, but the rebound founds its way to DJ Hart at the top of the right circle. He took a wrist shot that went inside the near post, top shelf over the shoulder of Ethan Langenegger.

The Knights almost went up 2-1 on a shot by Kaelan Taylor at the 9:00 mark, but his shot banged off the left post. It mattered little, however, as Clarkson scored only 30 seconds later. Ryan Taylor picked up possession behind the net and had a wrap-around pass that went out to Ty Brassington at the left circle. Brassington took a shot from that distance, but the puck redirected off the stick and then body of Luka Sukovic past a helpless Chauvette, who had no chance on the oddly bouncing puck.

Union appeared to be in a good spot to potentially tie the contest when Clarkson was whistled for a trip. The Garnet Chargers put just a few shots on the Clarkson net, and the second inadvertently sparked the Clarkson offense. Picking up possession off the save from Langenegger, Clarkson skated the other way with Ryan Richardson gaining possession in the neutral zone. Union was back defensively, but no one immediately went to Richardson to defense the captain, and he continued into the slot, getting close to the crease. Once the Garnet Chargers began to converge on Richardson, he dropped the puck back to an open Tristan Sarsland, who beat Chauvette for the Knights third goal of the game at 3:54, this time shorthanded.

The momentum very well could have shifted in the third period when Clarkson was called for both boarding and a contact-to-the-head penalty at 6:50, creating a 5-on-3 for two minutes and a five-minute power play for the Garnet Chargers. However, the Knights got seven saves from Langenegger during that five-minute penalty as well as some key blocked shots by the Clarkson defense to keep Union off the board. A few minutes after the penalty expired, Union pulled its goalie for an extra attacker, putting the Clarkson defense on its heels once again. But it was Clarkson that would end up scoring a goal, as Ayrton Martino won a race to the end line to gain possession of the puck, passing it back to Luka Sukovic for an empty-net goal at 17:34.

Union won the battle of shots, 29-18, though that came largely from a 17-3 edge in the third period when the team spent most of its time with extra skaters. Langenegger made 28 saves for the Knights and Chauvette had 14 stops for Union.
