The Clarkson Men's Hockey Team earned a road sweep with an overtime win over Michigan Tech, thanks to Captain
Ryan Richardson's goal with 17 seconds remaining. With the win, the Knights move to 5-2 on the season.
For Clarkson it is their first weekend sweep since they won back-to-back games Dec 28 & 29, 2022 vs UMass & Wisconsin (6-3, 3-1). This is the Knights first road sweep of the same team since December of 2020 with two wins at Mercyhurst.
Like last night, the two teams would go scoreless in the opening period. Shots were tied at 8 apiece in the first.
Clarkson would get a power play early in the 2nd when Sardarian would be called for charging the goaltender. On the power play,
Ellis Rickwood would score his 2nd of the season on a feed from
Ryan Taylor to put the Knights up 1-0.
The Huskies would even the score at 15:28 in the 2nd period when Chase Pietila would score his 2nd of the season. The teams would enter the intermission tied at one, with MTU slightly outshooting the Knights, 14 to 10.
In the 3rd period, the Knights and Huskies would generate a total of 20 shots, (11-9 MTU) and trade power plays. The Knights would take a penalty late would spill into the overtime. Clarkson would kill off the power play and then with about 1:30 left in OT, a delayed penalty would allow the Knights to get several chances with the extra attacker on. Finally, with :58 sec left, Sardarian would go off for hooking and Clarkson would go on their 3rd power play. Martino and Richardson would trade the puck as the overtime wound down and with :17 seconds left, Richardson would tuck it home to clear the Clarkson bench to the ice.
Ethan Lanenegger would finish with 34 saves for his 5th win of the season. Clarkson won the special teams battle tonight, going 2 for3 with their chances and holding the Huskies to 0 for 6 on the power play.
Clarkson will return home next weekend to host Alaska Fairbanks for a two game set. Fairbanks lost a pair of 2-1 games to Michigan Tech and split with Notre Dame already this season.
