Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights block their way to a win over Vermont

Clarkson would use some gutsy shot blocking and great special teams to earn their first road win of the season, with 3-1 victory over Vermont, in front of 3000+ at Gutterson Fieldhouse.  Clarkson would block 17 shots and get a power play goal while holding UVM to 0 for 4 to get their 3rd win of the season.

The Cats struck first early in the opening period when Luca Münzenberger scored on a screen shot from the point.  UVM would get 3 of the first 4 shots on net, but after a penalty kill at 11:08 the Knights seemed to gain momentum and take over the edge in chances and shots.

Clarkson would get a power play at 13:07, and would get their best chance of the game, on a tip shot in front that landed in front of Ryan Taylor, but UVM's Rancier would be able to roll over on top of the puck.

Clarkson would have 19 shot attempts and out shoot UVM 9-4 in the first period.

At the end of the period, what looked to be a harmless scrum at the boards turned into a power play to start the 2nd for UVM, as Jared Mangan would be assessed a grabbing the face mask penalty.  The Knights would kill of the power play but still be pinned in their own zone but a shot to the head of goaltender Ethan Langenegger would get a whistle as his facemack was knocked off.

A big penalty kill can often lead to a shift in momentum and just 2:34 after the kill, the Knights would tie the game on a great 3 on 2 rush that lead to a diving tip in goal.  Ellis Rickwood would feed Ryan Taylor who shot at Ayrton Martino's stick for the redirect into the net.

Then at 14:57, on the UVM rush, the Cats would take a holding the stick call when the puck carrier, Collin Kessler, would hold Sigurdson's stick as he tried to break free.  Clarkson would not score on the power play but generated 2 quality scoring chances.

At 12:20 of the middle frame, Oliver Moberg would get a partial breakaway and a hooking call on the Cats would be the initial call, but a hit after in the corner would lead to a 5 on 3 for the Knights.  A video review would not change the call on the ice, so Clarkson would have a 5 on 3 for 2 minutes.

With a Cats defender losing his stick, the power play had an extra advantage and great patience in front led to a goal from Ryan Taylor.  Instead of shooting right away, Taylor held for a moment until Rancier slid out of position and then tucked the shot up in the top corner.

Just as UVM came back to full strength, Kessler would get a hit from behind penalty.  He was assessed a 5 minute major and then after the video review he would also be assessed a game misconduct.  On the penalty kill UVM got a break in on Langenegger and he made the initial save and the puck crossed the line, but the official immediately waived it off saying that the player pushed the goaltender into the net.  The play was reviewed on a UVM challenge and the call of goaltender interference was held up.

Clarkson was unable to generate on the first part of the 5 minute power play.  Trey Taylor would get a high sticking call to make it 4 on 4.

The Knights would use their timeout at 2:57 of the 2nd period, after an icing to allow for a change of the line that had to stay on the ice after the icing.

Clarkson would have to kill of a UVM power play to end the period, Tristan Sarland would get a huge blocked shot and clear to help maintain the 2-1 lead.

Clarkson held a 19-14 shot advantage after two periods of play.

Vermont would have a push to start the final period that led to a power play at 14:40 when Richardson went off for hooking.  The Knights would get the kill and were able to gain some momentum from that PK.

UVM would have 2 pressure shifts after the 10 min mark of the period, but the Knights were able to get some gutsy blocks and timely clears.

UVM would ice the puck with 1:21 left on the clock, but an icing back the other way for the Knights allowed UVM to get their goalie off for the extra attacker at 1:07.  Then with 35.8 left on the clock with a delayed penalty coming to UVM, Clarkson was able to extend the lead to 3-1 when Trey Taylor would score to put the game away for the Knights.

Langenegger would finish with 17 saves for his 3rd win of the season.  Clarkson outshot the Cats 25-18, making the 5th game out of 5 that Clarkson has owned the shot advantage.

Clarkson will have a short week as they will make their longest road trip of the season next week, heading to Michigan Tech for a 2 game series.
