Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Knights Fall On Goal in Final Minute to RIT, 1-0

Potsdam, NY – A shorthanded squad looked a bit out of sorts on Saturday afternoon, as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team suffered its first defeat of 2023 when RIT scored a last minute goal for a 1-0 win on the road.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 6-1-2 overall and 1-1-0 in conference games, while RIT moved to 3-4-1 and 1-0-1 in Liberty League. Clarkson will face top-ranked William Smith College next weekend in Geneva, NY.

The first half was quite in terms of offense as neither team put together much in the way of chances on the other team's frame. The best chance of the half came just five minutes into the contest, as Emma Pedro's shot from roughly 20 yards away hit the right post.

Half number two saw both teams increase their chances. The first solid opportunity for Clarkson came on a hard groundball off the foot of Lillian Gillett, as the sophomore's shot to the left of the net sent Emily Sanchez diving to her left to make the save. Just a minute later on transition, RIT nearly had a score but the header from Olivia Harris was tipped away by Clarkson goalkeeper Ava Pushor. The senior was called upon a few other times in the second half, but she was able to stop a couple of breakaways by coming out of the net and reducing the angles. Clarkson had one more chance with about 20 minutes remaining, but Tonia Kousmanidis's shot rang off the post at 67:23.

It appeared as if the game would end in a clean sheet for both teams, but RIT was able to score the lone goal of the contest in the final minute. Awarded a penalty kick, the service into the box was punched away by Pushor, but it found the head of Corinne Amato, who was able to direct her pass over to Jessie Gomez. From there, Gomez volleyed the pass out of the air just inside the right post with only 35 seconds left to go.

RIT finished with an 11-9 edge in shots and a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. RIT also had eight corner kicks to Clarkson's four. Pushor made six saves for the Knights, while Sanchez made five stops for the Tigers.
