Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Late Comebacks by Knights Fall Short Versus Rose-Hulman and Augustana

Rock Island, IL – Breaking out of an offensive funk late in each match on Saturday, the Clarkson University Volleyball team ran out of steam in both efforts, falling in three straight to Rose-Hulman (25-23, 25-19, 29-27) and then in five to host Augustana (25-14, 25-15, 18-25, 21-25, 8-15) out in Illinois.

The Golden Knights will return to Potsdam with a record of 5-4. The Liberty League schedule begins next weekend at Alumni Gymnasium when the Golden Knights host conference foes Vassar College and Bard College.

In the first match of the day, Clarkson was within striking distance of winning each set and could just as easily come away with a sweep itself. The Knights led by one late in the first game (17-16) following a kill from Julia Bennett, but the Fightin' Engineers battled back to take the lead and would never relinquish it, holding off a late charge from the Knights thanks to kills from Morgan Korte. The second set saw Rose-Hulman build an early lead with eight of the first 10 points, but Clarkson climbed back to within two on three separate occasions, including down the stretch (20-18). However, the Engineers won five of the final six points for that victory. The third set was tied on numerous occasions in the early going, but Rose-Hulman produced a 9-1 run, capped off by an ace from Jillian Gregg which put the score at 18-10. Clarkson would not fold, however, battling all the way back to tie the set at 23-23 thanks to block assists from Isabelle Crow and Julia Bennett. The Knights had several set points, but it was the Fightin' Engineers that would win the set with three straight to close out the match, including kills from Kate Wood and Jillian Gregg.

Allyson Treichel led the Clarkson offense with 13 kills and a .321 hitting percentage, though no other player on offense recorded more than four kills. Isabelle Crow racked up 22 assists and Abigail Spector recorded an impressive 34 digs in three sets. Sara Galante also chipped in 17 digs in the match.

The second match of the day saw Clarkson struggle on offense as the Knights hit negative in the first set, while suffering from seven hitting errors, four service errors, and six reception errors in the second game. However, Clarkson rediscovered its offense in the third with an 18-kill effort. Down by one (14-13) near the midway point of the third set, Clarkson tied the set with a kill from Allyson Treichel and then three kills late from Natalie Peacock put the game away. The fourth was another close affair, though again the Knights trailed by a couple points with things getting late (18-16). Clarkson scored three key points thanks to a Sara Galante kills, block assists from Tess Sorel and Treichel, and then another kill from Treichel. That was enough to shift things in Clarkson's favor as three more kills closed out the set.

Possibly exhausted from the late comeback, Clarkson fell behind by eight in the deciding fifth set. A difficult deficit to overcome, Clarkson played even with Augustana the rest of the way, but the Knights were defeated by a kill from Leah Rizzo to end the match.

Spector posted 30-plus digs for the second straight match, recording 31 against the Vikings. Cecelia Velardi chipped in 14 digs and Sara Galante added 18 digs. Galante also led the way on offense with 18 kills, while Treichel tossed in 12 kills and six blocks. Marin Hangliter contributed 10 kills and Peacock also added nine kills. Isabelle Crow was busy with 43 assists and 12 digs.
