Everest Scores Second of Season, DiCaprio Comes Up Big in Clarkson's 1-0 Win Against Cortland

Potsdam, NY – Junior goalkeeper Molly DiCaprio made a huge save on a penalty kick with just 11 minutes remaining in the second half, as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team held on for a 1-0 win against SUNY Cortland on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 5-0-1 on the season, while the Red Dragons suffered their first in four games, falling to 3-2-1 on the year. Clarkson faces #14 Middlebury College on Sunday afternoon.

For the first 20 minutes of Saturday's contest, the game was essentially played in the midfield, as neither team got much in the way of offense. Clarkson picked up the first shot on goal of the game in the 20th minute, and the Red Dragons were held without a shot of any kind until the 27th minute. The contest began to loosen up a little as Clarkson started to carry play with a handful of opportunities late in the half.

Clarkson converted on one of those chances with a little under 10 minutes remaining. Off a corner kick from Julia Tylar, Emily Colby was able to rise above the rest to flick a header to the opposite post. Her attempt was denied by a Cortland defender, but the ricochet found the foot of Brooke Everest in front, and the freshman converted at 35:28 to put the Knights up 1-0.

After getting out shot 8-3 in the first half with no shots on frame, Cortland began to assert itself offensively in the second. Early on in the second half, Molly DiCaprio denied two shots in close to keep the game scoreless. However, the biggest defensive play of the game came with just over 10 minutes remaining. Sage Luke was taken down at the left side of the penalty area, and the Red Dragons were awarded a penalty kick. Bryn Thompson was called upon for the attempt, and her hard shot with a right foot was denied by DiCaprio, who laid out to her left to keep Cortland scoreless. The ball went free to a Clarkson defender, and it was cleared out of the zone to end the threat. Down the stretch, Cortland had two more shots, but both were well high of the frame, as Clarkson escaped with a 1-0 victory.

DiCaprio finished with five saves for her fourth solo shutout of the season, while at the other end Kristen Spendal also made five saves. Clarkson completed the game with a 13-11 edge in shots, though Cortland led in corners 4-3.
