Lavarnway Scores 11 Points in Knights 20-6 Win Over Canton

Potsdam, NY – Senior Julia Lavarnway was a part of 11 of the 20 goals scored by the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team's effort on Tuesday, as the Golden Knights cruised to a 20-6 victory over SUNY Canton at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-0 on the season while the Kangaroos fell to 0-2. Clarkson will be back in action again tomorrow when the team takes on Plattsburgh State.

Clarkson scored 10 goals in the first quarter, outshooting Canton 17-0 in the first 15 minutes of the game. Lavarnway produced assists on the first three goals of the game, finding Hailey Millington, Lauren Shanahan, and Mia Petrone in the first five minutes of the contest. Then in the next four minutes, Chrissy Benedict scored three straight goals to put Clarkson up 6-0. The offense slowed slightly in the final five minutes, but Hailey Millington's goal in the waning seconds of the period allowed the clock to move continuously with a 10-goal lead.

In the second quarter, Canton scored three of the game's four goals late in the period to briefly halt the running clock, but a Lavarnway goal with 1:19 left in the half returned Clarkson's lead to double digits, and the Knights would hold at least a 10-goal lead on the Roos for the rest of the contest.

Julia Lavarnway scored twice and assisted on nine goals for 11 points, while also snagging three groundballs. Lauren Shanahan scored four goals and also added three caused turnovers and four draw controls. Madelynn Barnum nearly duplicated those numbers with four points on three goals and an assist while also adding four draws and causing two turnovers. Benedict finished with four goals, Millington scored three times, and Mia Petrone added three points and three groundballs. Jennaca McGill got the start and allowed three goals in the first half, while Danni Moran stopped a shot and had four groundballs while giving up three goals in the second half for the Knights.

Samantha Dayter led SUNY Canton with four points on two goals and two assists, and Maddy Caron scored twice with seven draws. Olivia Scott made 10 stops in the Canton crease and also led the team with five groundballs.

Overall, Clarkson held significant advantages in shots (37-9), shots on goal (30-7), and groundballs (16-9).
