Knights Start 2023 With 15-11 Victory at Oswego

Oswego, NY – Senior Julia Lavarnway set up four first-half goals and scored one of her own as the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team got out to a big lead early and started the 2023 season with a 15-11 victory over Oswego State on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights will be back in action tomorrow when the team faces SUNY Potsdam at home.

Both teams' offenses started slow as neither team could find the back of the net for the first 10 minutes of the contest. Clarkson broke through with a pair of goals only 62 seconds apart in the opening quarter, as Lavarnway found Chrissy Benedict at 4:46 and then also connected with Mia Petrone at the 3:44 mark.

In the second quarter, Lavarnway found teammates Madelynn Barnum (9:14) and Hailey Millington (6:15) to put the advantage at 4-0, and the Knights eventually found themselves up 6-0 with time running out on the half. Oswego ended its scoreless drought with a goal in the final minutes and the Knights led 6-1 at the break.

Barnum scored twice early in the third and Lauren Meyers and Hailey Millington added to the Knights total for a 10-1 lead near the midway point of the third period. However, Oswego would start battling back, getting to within five goals late in the third. Clarkson returned its advantage to a more comfortable margin and cruised to the win, despite Oswego scoring the final four goals of the game in the final 11 minutes.
