Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Fast Start Gives Knights Early Edge In Quarterfinals Series Versus Cornell, 5-1

Potsdam, NY – A strong first period with three goals in a stretch of less than eight minutes saw the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team cruise to a 5-1 win over Cornell University in Game One of the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals on Friday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

With the win, the Golden Knights improved to 27-8-2 on the season, while Cornell fell to 15-13-2. The two teams will meet again on Saturday, with Clarkson looking to gain an ECAC Quarterfinal sweep over the Big Red.

It took some time for either team to put a shot on goal, but once Clarkson got going the team was tough to slow down. Cornell had the best early scoring chance when Claudia Yu skated in and hit the post less than five minutes into the game, but that lost opportunity was enough for the Knights to grasp the momentum. Clarkson's best early shot came when Gabrielle David's attempted one-timer from in close passed harmlessly through the crease at the 9:00 mark, but two minutes later the Knights got on the scoreboard. Baylee Kirwan stole the puck behind the net and passed the puck off the boards to Sara Swiderski just inside the blue line. Swiderski found an opening and flipped a shot on goal, and the puck found its way through as it deflected past a Cornell defender and past Brynn Dulac at 11:06.

When a tripping penalty put Cornell down a skater, Clarkson took its time on the power-play. Immediately after a partial switch, the Knights scored at 16:39 to take a 2-0 lead. Haley Winn collected the puck near the blue line and sent a pass down to the bottom of the right circle to Anne Cherkowski. With time, Cherkowski then sent a pass to the top of the crease, where Brooke McQuigge was able to redirect the puck over the shoulder of Dulac.

Just two minutes later, the Knights scored again to put the Big Red on its heels in the first period. An attempted rush near mid-ice was broken up and Winn was able to collect the puck. David then skated in on the left side and took a shot from the top of the left circle. While Dylac was able to stop the initial shot, she mistakenly tried to poke the puck away instead of trying to cover up at the top of the crease. That miscue ended up on the stick of Nicole Gosling, who took a wrist shot from the left face-off circle and beat the Cornell defense to give the Knights a 3-0 edge.

After the third goal of the opening period, Cornell changed out its goaltenders, substituting Deanna Fraser between the pipes. Clarkson was busier in the second period on offense, but could not feat Fraser in its 11 attempts on goal. Several of those came during a power play chance and the biggest stop came on a Sena Catterall break away, though Catterall's angle was a difficult one when she collected the puck along the boards.

Clarkson picked up an insurance goal in the first five minutes of the third period. The Knights intercepted the puck near mid-ice and worked things backward to set up its offense. It appeared as if the rush would be halted when Fraser settled the puck behind the net for another Cornell player, but a strong fore check by Baylee Kirwan saw Clarkson pick up possession, if only briefly. Kirwan slid the puck out in front, where Kirstyn McQuigge was able to easily wrist a shot past Fraser at 5:01 of the third for a 4-0 lead.

Cornell finally got on the scoreboard midway through the final period, doing so efficiently just six seconds into its first power-play chance of the game. Lily Deliandelis won the faceoff and the puck found its way back to Grace Dwyer, who sent a pass over to Izzy Daniel. A quick short pass from Daniel found Deliandelis in front to put the score at 4-1 with less than eight minutes to go.

The Big Red chose to pull Fraser for an extra attacker with four minutes remaining, but Clarkson was able to withstand Cornell's extra attacker. Eventually, the Knights were able to put the game way when Gabrielle David scored on the empty net at the 18:32 mark of the third.

Clarkson finished with a narrow 27-24 edge in shots on goal, as Michelle Pasiechnyk stopped 23 shots in the Knights' crease. Dulac made three saves in less than 19 minutes of the first period, and Fraser denied 19 shots over 41-plus minutes of work in the Cornell goal.
