Knights Fall in Three Versus Scanton

Ithaca, NY – Following a slow start on offense, the Clarkson University Volleyball team got things in order for the final two sets, but the Golden Knights did not have quite enough firepower to come away with a win, falling to Scranton in straight sets 25-13, 25-19, 25-23 on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights dropped to 12-10 overall while Scranton moved to 14-9. Clarkson closes out the regular-season next weekend at home when it hosts SUNY Cortland and Nazareth College in a tri-match at Alumni Gymnasium.

In the first set, Clarkson fell behind as the Royals scored four of the first five points, but the Green and Gold kept things at the margin over the course of the next 14 points. However, Clarkson struggled on the serve receive in the next stretch as Maddie Forry had a pair of aces and Camryn Hoffman delivered another, with Scranton recording seven of eight points. Shortly after, Clarkson fell behind by double digits and couldn't recover.

The next two sets were considerably closer, as Clarkson did not let the slow start change its outlook on the match. The Knights opened set two with five straight kills, including two from Olivia Freer and two more from Sara Galante. Scranton rallied to make things close, but the Knights still held a three-point lead midway through the game (16-13). The Royals capitalized on several attack errors as well as a group of kills to rattle off nine straight points for a 22-16 lead. The Knights got back within four, but two unforced errors allowed Scranton to win the second set.

The third saw Clarkson fall behind in the early going, but the Knights wouldn't let the game get away. Two kills from Marin Hangliter and another from Sara Galante drew the Knights within one (15-14), and a few moments later Clarkson scored six straight to take the lead (21-18). The Royals responded with four straight points of their own to recapture the advantage, only to see Clarkson tie the set at both 22 and 23. Unfortunately for the Knights, two attack errors ended the set and the match.

Sara Galante led the team offensively with 12 kills, while also adding in six digs and a pair of solo blocks. Isabelle Crow contributed 22 assists and seven digs, and Abigail Spector headlined the Clarkson defense with 13 digs.

For Scranton, Deanna Whelpley hit .346 with 10 kills and two aces, and Stephanie Margolies produced 10 kills and nine digs. Cammi Quirk and Gianna Detorie split setting duties with 17 and 10 assists, respectively. Maddie Forry also recorded 11 digs, seven assists, and a pair of aces.
