DiCaprio Posts Seven Saves in 0-0 Tie Versus Cortland

Cortland, NY – Sophomore Molly DiCaprio made seven stops, including one on a first-half penalty kick, to help the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team secure a 0-0 tie at Cortland State on Wednesday evening.

The Golden Knights remained unbeaten at 2-0-1 while Cortland saw its record go to 1-0-2. Clarkson will be on the road again this weekend with games in New Hampshire against Roger Williams University and New England College.

Although Clarkson was without a shot for the first 25 minutes, the Golden Knights might have had the best scoring chance of the first half. Chloe Hodge carried the ball deep into the corner and sent a cross all the way through the box that cleared the reach of the Cortland goalkeeper, but a Red Dragons' defender was able to head the ball away before Sarah Kohls had an opportunity to finish off the play. Just a few moments later, Cortland had a solid scoring chance as well, when Hannah Blacher's chance from the top of the 18 cleared the crossbar by just a few feet. Cortland enjoyed another couple solid chances about 10 minutes later when Jaden Galluzo had one shot during a scrum skip wide and one more again cleared the crossbar.

The biggest moment of the first half, however, came when Clarkson was whistled for a handball in the penalty area, allowing the Red Dragons a penalty kick with 2:30 remaining. DiCaprio sprawled to her left to deny the shot and the ensuing rebound was sent wide, keeping the game scoreless through the half.

The second half was quiet compared to the many scoring opportunities in the first. Cortland had a handful of corner kick chances, but they rarely amounted to anything. Clarkson had a chance with roughly 10 minutes to go when Chloe Hodge sent a cross through the box to the far post, with the ball going through the hands of Cortland goalkeeper Kristen Spendal, but none of the Knights could collect the loose ball. A few moments later, DiCaprio again made a full extension save off a shot from Simone Neivel, and the next two corner kicks for the Dragons came up empty.

With roughly four minutes to go, Jaden Galluzo appeared to be offsides when Cortland cleared the ball back into its offensive zone, but instead ended up with a break away on the Clarkson net. DiCaprio slowed her down slightly, but Galluzo was down near the post alone with a shot, which was deflected away by the Golden Knights' defense to keep the game scoreless.

Cortland finished with a 22-8 edge in shots, and a 9-3 lead in shots on goals. The Red Dragons also had 12 corner kick chances. DiCaprio finished with seven saves for the Knights, and Spendal made three stops for Cortland.
