Weldy and Nickels Pace Knights at Cardinal Classic

Plattsburgh, NY – Sophomore Ella Weldy of the Clarkson University Cross Country team ran with the top runners throughout Saturday's event, as she finished fourth among 37 runners at the 40th annual Cardinal Classic Cross Country Invitational held at Plattsburgh State.

The Golden Knights' women placed second among the three complete teams with 59 points, trailing St. Lawrence (17) and just ahead of host Plattsburgh State (61), while both Paul Smith's and SUNY Potsdam ran as incomplete teams. Clarkson's men were third among five complete squads with 67 points, behind St. Lawrence (19) and Plattsburgh State (50), but ahead of SUNY Potsdam (119) and Paul Smith's (138) while Clinton Community College ran incomplete.

Weldy finished fourth in the 5,000-meter event, with a time of 20 minutes, 21.9 seconds. Ava Frost came in 17th for the Knights in 23:27.0, one spot ahead of teammate Ava Schieffert, who closed out the race in 23:34.5. Meilin Lamanna was next for Clarkson in 24th with a time of 25:04.9 and Sydney Alexanian finished off the Green and Gold's team scoring with a 27th-place finish in 25:38.9. Kylie Nowicki (28th, 25:46.8) and Emily Marshall (30th, 26:20.4) were next for Clarkson.

On the men's side, sophomore Tyler Nickels also finished in the top 10 for Clarkson, taking eighth in 20:33.9 in the 6,000-meter event. Freshman Andrew Wade was the next runner for Clarkson, roughly 20 seconds later, as the first-year collegian was 16th in 20:52.3. Seniors Eric Nowak and Dylan Richard also ended up in the top 20, with Nowak taking 18th in 21:09.4 and Richard placing 20th in 21:14.6. Derek Ferreira's 29th-place showing closed out Clarkson's score, as he had a time of 22:15.0. Caeden Bailey (35th, 23:04.7) and Evan Baird (36th, 23:05.0) were also in Clarkson's top seven.
