Knights Open 2022 with Four-Set Win Over Plymouth State

Plattsburgh, NY – The opening match of 2022 saw the Clarkson University Volleyball team show a diverse offense as the Golden Knights walked away with a four-set victory over Plymouth State (25-17, 25-14, 17-25, 25-17) on day one of the Plattsburgh Invitational.

Clarkson gets a brief break with just one match on Friday, but will be back at Plattsburgh for two contests on Saturday as they take on the Coast Guard Academy and host Plattsburgh State.

The Green and Gold rushed out to a 5-0 lead in the first set and never looked back, claiming double-digit leads several times in the game before eventually settling at eight points (25-17) as the team hit .324 (15-4-34) against Plymouth's even .000 (8-8-33). The second set was more of the same as the Knights again took an early lead, though the Panthers did cut the deficit to just one midway through the game. Clarkson rattled off the final nine points of the set for an 11-point margin.

Set three was a bit different compared to the first two, as Plymouth State put Clarkson its heels with an early eight-point lead (11-3). The Knights trimmed the deficit to four on four occasions, but could never find the groove to complete the comeback and the sweep. It appeared as if a fifth set might be necessary near the midway point of the fourth game as Plymouth enjoyed a 17-16 lead, but Clarkson's offense took advantage of some Panther miscues and also found a handful of options on the outside to finish off the game with the final nine points for a 25-17 victory in game four.

No Clarkson players finished in double figures in kills, though Marin Hangliter and Sara Galante each came close with nine kills apiece. Allyson Treichel and Tess Sorel added seven kills each, and Kristin Werdine contributed six kills. Isabelle Crow contributed 36 assists and 13 digs for a double-double, and also added four aces from the service line. Emma Baxter tied for the team lead on defense with 13 digs, while Hangliter also tossed in 11 digs.

For Plymouth State, Emilee Flanagan and Lilli Stogner each had nine kills, though the latter also had 10 errors on offense. Nora Ryan also tossed in eight kills for the Panthers. Kalista Butler posted 20 assists and Makayla Marucci notched 16 digs. Stogner also recorded five service aces.
