Knights Drop Doubleheader to Rochester, 12-5 and 7-2

Rochester, NY – After a nine-inning slugfest that saw the two teams combine for 28 runs, offense was comparatively muted on Sunday between the Clarkson University Baseball team and University of Rochester, but the Golden Knights were still unable to come away with a win as the Green and Gold fell 12-5 and 7-2 in a doubleheader at Towers Field.

The Golden Knights saw their mark fall to 5-13 overall and 2-6 in Liberty League games, while Rochester improved to 19-4 and 8-0. Clarkson had its non-league game against SUNY Canton for Wednesday postponed, so the Knights will be back in action next weekend when the team hosts Rensselaer.

The opener had all the signs of another explosive offensive contest in the first few innings as Rochester had two runs in the first and the Knights scored three in the bottom of the second. Joseph Rende plated Rochester's first run with a sac fly and then Jacob Matzat homered to make it 2-0 early. Clarkson picked up three runs in the bottom of the second as Mike Nee led off with a triple and then came in on an error. Joe Pagano, who reached on the error, later scored on a fielder's choice, and Jake Millich drove in a run with a fielder's choice as well. In the third, the Knights picked up another run when Tommy Bianchi drove a run in with a ground out.

Rochester scored four in the top of the fifth to take the lead for good, tying the game on a two-run single from Harper Sy, picking up the go-ahead run on a sac fly from Jackson Reed, and then receiving the game-winning RBI on a single by Josh Leadem. The Knights picked up one in the bottom of the fifth on another RBI groundout from Bianchi, but the Yellowjackets scored three runs in both the sixth and seventh to claim a 12-5 win.

Game two opened with an inside-the-park home run from Aaron Whitley and the Yellowjackets scored one more run on a double from Matzat. Rochester picked up another run in the third on an RBI single by Harper Sy, then scored one more in the sixth on a sac fly. Whitley plated another run with a single in the seventh before Clarkson finally broke through, as Sean Eddington delivered an RBI single. Rochester plated two more in the eighth, and Colby Brouillette tripled in a run in the bottom half of the eighth to round out the scoring in game two.

Kyle Locklear took the loss in game one, striking out six in four innings of work before being lifted for a reliever in the middle of the fifth. Nicholas Hofacker took the loss for the Knights in game two, striking out five over eight innings. Brouillette and Nee each had multi-hit games in the first contest of the doubleheader.
