Knights Win Sixth Straight to Open 2022 with 18-5 Win Over Plattsburgh

Plattsburgh, NY – Despite getting off to a relatively slow start, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team scored three times in the final 61 seconds of the first quarter to truly kick start the team's offense as the Golden Knights defeated Plattsburgh State 18-5 Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights remained unbeaten at 6-0 while the Cardinals fell to 1-3 on the season. Clarkson will be challenged this weekend as it faces a pair of conference foes each ranked in the top 10 in the country in William Smith College and Ithaca College.

Although Madelynn Barnum scored in the opening minute of the game, Clarkson was nevertheless a little slow out of the gate. The Knights led 2-1 midway through the quarter before a pair of goals from Sofie Mangino and Barnum put the Green and Gold up 4-1 at the 3:37 mark, forcing the Cardinals to take a timeout. Plattsburgh responded well out of the break, scoring within 30 seconds, but Clarkson rattled off three goals in the final 61 seconds, including a goal with just one tick of the clock remaining, to gain a 7-2 lead through the first 15 minutes.

The second quarter saw Clarkson score a little more consistently, though the team's output was the same as the first period. Mia Petrone scored from Julia Lavarnway at 12:54 and Lavarnway then added a pair of goals to give the Knights a 10-2 advantage. Following scores from Roderick and Barnum, only 15 seconds apart near the middle of the quarter, Clarkson got the clock to keep running thanks to a 10-goal lead, something that would not change for the remainder of the contest.

Up by double figures in the second half, Clarkson took its foot off the pedal offensively, scoring just three times in the third quarter and just once in the fourth. Plattsburgh ended a near 40-minute scoring drought when Rachel LaMar found the back of the net at 11:34 of the final period, but the outcome was well decided by that point.

Clarkson controlled the contest overall, enjoying a 38-17 lead in shots, 29-10 edge in shots on goal, 12-0 in free-position shots, and 24-13 in groundballs.

Julia Lavarnway scored six points on four goals and two assists while Madelynn Barnum added six points thanks to five goals and an assist. Sydney Roderick also scored five points with two goals and three assists, gaining the seventh spot in scoring all-time in Clarkson Women's Lacrosse history with her third point of the contest. Hailey Millington also scored three times. Sofie Mangino added two points and had three groundballs, tying for the team lead in the latter category with Chrissy Benedict and McKenzie Tikalsky. Grace Hagberg also notched six draws to go along with her goal. Sydney Christiansen stopped five shots before Laura Wing replaced her late in the game.

For Plattsburgh, Johanna Malone made five saves and Alexa Cassidy stopped six shots as the two split time in the Cardinals' crease. Caroline Noia led the team on offense, scoring four points with two goals and two assists.
