Bats Start Off Strong in 11-4 Win for CU Baseball

Auburndale, FL – Junior Kent Wilson and senior Mike Nee combined for six hits and six runs batted in as the Clarkson University Baseball team opened up the 2022 campaign with an 11-4 victory over Concordia University Chicago on Friday afternoon at the Lake Myrtle Baseball Complex.

The Golden Knights, now 1-0 on the year, will face Penn State Altoona in a doubleheader on Saturday. Concordia fell to 3-6 on the year.

Clarkson got things going offensively in its first at bat of the season as Kent Wilson got things going with a one-out triple to right-center and then came home on a single up the middle from Colby Brouillette. Brouillette advanced to third on a bloop single from Mike Nee, and the bases were later loaded when Tommy Bianchi drew a walk, but the Knights were held to just a single run in the frame.

Kyle Locklear allowed the first two runners to reach in the bottom half of the inning, but a strikeout looking and a double-play started by Michael Tito allowed the senior to wiggle out of trouble. In the next half inning, the bases were loaded with two down and Locklear struck out the final hitter to again escape any damage.

In the top of the third, Brouillette reached on a four-pitch walk and came around on a triple to center by Mike Nee to put Clarkson up 2-0, but Concordia's Jack Rector minimized the damage by striking out the next three hitters. Concordia got the run back in the bottom of the third when Brody Mariotti plated Garry Maynard with a sacrifice fly.

An inning later, Clarkson manufactured a pair of runs without the ball leaving the infield in the air as Jonathan Irons walked and moved to third when Caleb Doyle reached on an error that scooted past the Concordia third baseman. Kent Wilson then hit a high chopper to second and beat out the throw to first to drive in Irons, and later an overthrow on a pick-off attempt allowed Doyle to score for a 4-1 Clarkson lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Concordia scored its first run of the inning without the benefit of a hit by taking walks, stealing bases, and advancing on fly outs, then added another run on a seeing-eye single. Maynard drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and then Mariotti dribbled a hit through the left side to drive in another run to cut the deficit back to one.

After a fairly quiet fifth, Clarkson got back on the board in the sixth. John Young singled up the middle and Doyle followed with a double to left. Wilson then bounced a ball to second, which was enough to score Young to put the score at 5-3.

Clarkson broke the game open in the top of the seventh by pushing across three runs. Zachary Carpin walked and stole second and Bianchi then walked to put runners on first and second. Tito reached on a bunt single to load the bases, allowing Carpin to score shortly thereafter on a wild pitch. Carpin would have scored anyway, as Michael Mieczkowski walked to reload the bases. Young kept the bases loaded when he reached on an error, allowing Bianchi to score and two batters later Kent Wilson hit a sac fly to center to drive in another run.

In the eighth, the Knights picked up a few insurance runs, starting when Carpin walked and advanced to third on two wild pitches. He then trotted home easily on a single to left-center from Tito. A pair of walks loaded the bases with two outs, and Wilson delivered again with a two-run single up the middle to make it 11-3.

Wilson was the big bat for the Knights in the opener, going 3-for-5 with a run scored and five more driven home, while Mike Nee also had an RBI and was 3-for-6. Doyle doubled twice in his 2-for-5 effort and Tito also went 2-for-5. John Young reached twice and scored twice on a walk and a single, and Carpin scored twice thanks to a pair of walks. Griffin Tubbs earned the win by tossing six innings in relief of Kyle Locklear. The duo combined to strike out eight in the game.
