Dumont Scores 19 for Knights in Loss at William Smith

Geneva, NY – William Smith got off to a hot start on the interior in the first quarter and put the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team in an early hole which they could never fully recover as the Golden Knights dropped a 73-63 decision to the Herons in Liberty League action Monday evening.

The Golden Knights fell to 5-17 on the season and 4-12 in conference games while William Smith kept its playoff hopes alive at 6-16 and 5-10. Clarkson returns home to take on Union College and Skidmore College this weekend.

The Herons went to their strength immediately in the opening quarter, getting some open looks on the inside and converting from the perimeter when given space. William Smith shot 8-for-15 in the first period for 24 points, putting Clarkson on its heels as the team struggled to get open looks.

The second quarter was a different story on the defensive end for the Knights as the open looks that William Smith received in first 10 minutes did not fall with the same frequency. Clarkson was able to take some advantage and reduced the deficit by two, but the Knights still trailed at the break by double figures.

Both teams were able to get going offensively in the third quarter. Clarkson was able to get on the board thanks to a 3-point hot streak from Mariah Benavides, while William Smith converted on second chances, getting seven offensive boards in the third alone.

In the fourth, Clarkson was finally able to get within single digits of William Smith in the early going, but the Herons had an answer and actually extended their lead to 19 points with just over four minutes to go. Clarkson responded with quick takes near the rim, as Cassidy Dumont had a big final few mintues, scoring 10 points in the last four ticks to make things interesting.

Dumont finished with 19 points on 8-for-19 shooting while Lauryn Withrow chipped in 10 points off the bench. Mariah Benavides also scored 11 points and Eliana Porter was within one point of a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.

For William Smith, three players scored 20-plus points, led by Brooke Jarvis and Lauren DeVaney, who each had 21. Devaney had a double-double with 21 points and 18 boards, as did Olivia Parisi with 20 points and 11 boards.
