Vassar Escapes With 62-59 Win Over Golden Knights

Potsdam, NY – A pair of last second 3-pointers missed the mark as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end with a 62-59 defeat at the hands of Vassar College in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights saw their record to go to 5-13 overall and 4-8 in the Liberty League while Vassar remained atop the conference standings at 11-1 and 12-6 overall. Clarkson will now hit the road for two weekends before closing out the season at home in late-February.

Clarkson opened the game with five straight points and held a 12-7 lead after a 3-pointer from Ruthie Nolan at the 4:02 mark in the first, but Vassar responded with six straight points to take the lead at 2:58. The two teams jostled back and forth for the next 13 minutes, as the lead went back and forth on several occasions. Dani Douglas hit a 3-pointer at 4:44 to take a four-point lead (28-24). The Knights then closed out the half with three straight layups from Lauryn Withrow, Lauren Bell, and Maddie Pratt to put Clarkson up by three at the break.

At the start of the second half, Clarkson pushed its advantage to six points when Mariah Benavides converted on the interior, but Vassar kept things close by going to the inside as well. Emily Tincher dropped in a 3-pointer at the 3:40 mark to give Vassar a small lead, but again the Knights came back as Lauryn Withrow hit a lefty layup in the final minute to put Clarkson up by one through three quarters.

Clarkson held a small lead after Mariah Benavides made a layup at 8:19, but a 3-pointer from Tincher returned the lead to the Brewers and they would never relinquish the advantage. Clarkson was either within one or three for most of the fourth quarter and after a pair of free throws from Sarah Gilooly with 5.4 seconds left, the Knights ended up with two desperation heaves. Cassidy Dumont's attempt from the top of the key bounced off the rim and eventually out of bounds with the ball still belonging to Clarkson. With only 0.7 seconds left Mariah Benavides took a deep shot from roughly 30 feet out and her attempt fell short, allowing Vassar to escape with the win.

Four players finished in double figures for the Knights, led by Cassidy Dumont's near double-double as she had 14 points and nine rebounds. Lauryn Withrow chipped in 13 points and Mariah Benavides added 11 points. Lauren Bell also shot 5-for-6 from the floor for 10 points while Ruthie Nolan was just a point short of a double-double with nine points and 16 rebounds to go along with five assists.

For Vassar, Sarah Gilooly finished with 13 points, Julia Harvey had 12 points and both Alex Lee (11) and Emily Tincher (10) finished in double figures.
