Knights on Short End of Slugfest at Rochester, 13-8

Rochester, NY – As it occurred in mid-April, offense was aplenty in the Liberty League Semifinals between the Clarkson University Baseball team and University of Rochester, but the Yellowjackets outhit the Golden Knights in another slugfest, eliminating the Green and Gold from the conference tournament 13-8 at Towers Field.

The Golden Knights closed out the season with a record of 14-16-1 while Rochester will move on to the championship game of tournament with a record of 23-8.

Rochester was consistent in its scoring putting up at least one run in each of the first six innings, and the Knights had opportunities with at least one hit in each of the first four frames before coming through with six in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

The Yellowjackets jumped out to an 8-0 lead by getting two in the first, one in the second, four in the third, and one in the fourth. John Moses singled in Joe Rende and then later scored on a hit by Josh Leadem for the first two runs, and Rende singled in Aaron Whitley in the second. In the bottom of the third, the first run came in a bases loaded walk and the second came in on a ground out. Aaron Whitley then singled in another and a stolen bases put the Yellowjackets up 7-0. In the fourth, Brian McKinsey singled in Harper Sy for Rochester's eight run.

Clarkson put together one of its signature big innings in the top of the fifth and made things interesting for the Yellowjackets. Kent Wilson started with a one-out single and Mike Nee followed with another base knock. Colby Brouillette then ripped a home run to deep right to get the Knights on the scoreboard, 8-3. Zachary Carpin immediately followed with a triple and then came in on a throwing error that allowed Michael Mieczkowski to reach third. After a walk to Sean Gill, Michael Tito reached on an error to send in Mieczkowski, and Gill scored from second on a hit to left by Jonathan Irons, pulling the Knights to within two, 8-6.

Rochester got three runs of its lead back in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a sacrifice fly from Sy and run-scoring hits by Leadem and Jacob Matzat. In the sixth, Nee walked and then scored on a Brouillette triple, and the sophomore designated hitter scored on a sac fly by Mieczkowski. The Jackets kept the inning even with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame thanks to a two-run single by Moses.

Both offenses were silenced for the final two and a half innings, though Clarkson did have baserunners in both the seventh and ninth.

Brouillette finished a double short of the cycle, going 3-for-5 with four runs driven in and two more scored, while Wilson and Tito each went 2-for-5. For Rochester, Aaron Whitley went 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored, Rende went 3-for-3, Leadem was 3-for-4 and Moses was 2-for-4 with three runs driven in and two more scored. Both teams' final relievers went relatively untouched, as Jake Phillips tossed 2.2 scoreless innings for Clarkson and Thomas Karpishin allowed two runs over 4.2 innings to gain the win.
