Clarkson Uses Long Ball in Doubleheader Sweep of SUNY Canton

Canton, NY – Six swings cleared the fences for the Clarkson University Softball team, as the Golden Knights put up 26 runs in a doubleheader sweep of SUNY Canton on Tuesday, winning 14-0 and 12-3 in non-league action.

Clarkson improved to 14-6 overall while the Kangaroos fell to 1-14. The 14 runs that the Green and Gold scored in the first game tied for the third-most in program history, while the 26 runs were the most scored in any doubleheader by the Knights.

Clarkson was held to just a single hit in the first three innings, but left the bases loaded without a run scoring in the second. The Golden Knights opened up in the fourth with their biggest inning in program history, scoring 14 times. Kayla Robert opened with a walk and moved to second on an infield single from Maddie Brink. Alyssa Schaechinger doubled in the first run and Katy Aldous singled in another to put Clarkson up 2-0. Rylee LeBourveau then delivered a ground-rule double to push two more across, and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-0. Sarah Vaccaro delivered a three-run homer to center, Aldous doubled in another run, two more scored on wild pitches, and LeBourveau finally closed out the scoring in the inning with a two-run homer to left, her second extra-base hit of the frame.

Ten different players notched at least one hit in the game, with Brink, Aldous, and LeBourveau each recording two hits. Olivia Zoeller gained her 10th win of the season, allowing just a single hit in five innings with nine strikeouts.

Game two saw the Golden Knights score more steadily than in the first contest, putting up runs in five of the six innings. Maddie Brink began things for the Knights in the second, hitting a solo homer to left, and in the third Clarkson scored four runs. The first game on a double-steal where Bridget Twaits took the plate, and the second came in when Olivia Zoeller raced home on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Emily McBath singled home a pair to put the Knights up 5-0.

In the fourth, Kayla Robert doubled home Zoeller, and in the fifth Sam Short singled in another to put Clarkson out in front 7-0. Canton scored once in the bottom half of the fifth, but Clarkson tallied five in the sixth when Sarah Vaccaro and Sydney Russo hit back-to-back solo home runs, and Rylee LeBourveau hit a three-run rocket to left to finish off the Knights' offense for the day.

Sam Short went 3-for-4 while Emily McBath, Maddie Brink, Olivia Zoeller and Bridget Twaits each added two hits to the parade. Seven different players drove in a run, led by LeBourveau's three that came in on her sixth inning homer. Emily McBath tossed four scoreless innings and Riley Page threw the final two frames, giving up three unearned runs.
