Knights Sweep Doubleheader Versus Cazenovia, 13-4 and 8-3

Cortland, NY – Mike Nee stroked five hits and both Colby Brouillette and Evan Lira homered as the Clarkson University Baseball team swept a doubleheader against Cazenovia College, 13-4 and 8-3, at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights moved to 3-5 on the season and the team will head to Bard College on Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader. Cazenovia fell to 3-9 on the year.

After a quiet outing midweek against SUNY Cortland, Clarkson's bat woke up early in the first game as the team posted at least one run in all but the third inning. The Knights got on the scoreboard in the first as Kent Wilson drew a walk, stole second, and then came home on a two-out double from Mike Nee. In the second, Evan Lira hit a homer to left and the Knights added another run thanks to a two-out double from Joe Stockman that plated Wilson.

Clarkson tacked three in the fourth as Lira reached on a single, stole second, and then moved up to third on a flare single by Gerard Mouton. Joe Stockman then drove in both players with a triple and came around himself on a sacrifice fly by Joe Pagano to put the Knights up 6-0.

Cazenovia broke through with a run in the fourth, but Lira singled home Jonathan Irons in the top of the fifth to return the advantage to six runs. That margin would get reduced dramatically in the bottom of the fifth when Cameron Ciampaglia delivered a three-run triple to cut the deficit to 7-4. However, Clarkson posted crooked numbers in the sixth and seventh to put the game away. Wilson singled home Stockman, Kyle Locklear plated Wilson with a sacrifice fly, and Nee singled in Joe Pagano in the sixth, while Wilson, Nee and Irons each drove in a run in the top of the seventh.

Clarkson produced 17 hits in the opener, with Nee (3-for-4, three RBI), Wilson (3-for-3, three runs scored, three RBI), Irons (3-for-5), Lira (3-for-4, two runs, two RBI), and Stockman (3-for-4, three runs, two RBI) each enjoyed impressive games. Glenn Stever picked up the win for Clarkson, striking out nine over six innings, and Sam Crawford pitched a scoreless seventh, striking out two.

In game two, Cazenovia played the role of visiting team and scored in the top half of the first as Cameron Ciampaglia drove in Parker Wing, who had singled and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt, with a base hit. However, Clarkson scored all the runs it would need in the bottom half of the frame. Pagano got things started with a one-out single and came around on a triple to center by Mike Nee. Mike Mieczkowski then grounded out to allow Nee to score, but Clarkson kept things going when Colby Brouillette doubled home two more runs to put the Knights up 4-1.

The Knights picked up another run in the bottom of the second thanks to a sacrifice fly by Pagano which scored Wilson after a lead-off triple, but Cazenovia cut the lead to two with a pair of runs in the third. The game remained close until the bottom half of the fifth as Brouillette hit a drive to left that cleared the fences and scored himself and Joe Stockman to make it 7-3. In the bottom half of the six, the Green and Gold scored another insurance run as Mieczkowski singled home Pagano for the final run.

Nee finished 2-for-2 with a run and another run driven home and Mieczkowski drove in two runs while going 2-for-4 at the plate. Brouillette also was 2-for-4, driving in four runs. Griffin Tubbs started the game on the mound for the Knights and struck out two over four frames and Kyle Locklear closed things out with three scoreless frames, whiffing five and allowing just a single hit.
