20th-Ranked Cortland Outlasts Clarkson, 11-9

Cortland, NY – Despite sophomore Sebastian Geiger's five points on three goals and two assists, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team came up short in a back-and-forth affair against 20th-ranked SUNY Cortland on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 2-3 overall and while Cortland moved to 2-1. Clarkson will face top-ranked RIT on Saturday afternoon when the Green and Gold open Liberty League play at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights held a slight advantage in most facets of the game in the first quarter and ended the first 15 minutes up by a pair of goals. Sebastian Geiger converted off a pass from Conor Bartlett while the Knights were up a player after a Cortland penalty at the 8:44 mark and Bryan Penney scored an unassisted goal in the final two minutes of the quarter for an early lead. Clarkson scored again at the start of the second when Bartlett found Jay Considine at 13:38, but Cortland was quick to respond with three straight goals in a span of just over four minutes. The tie proved brief as Bryan Penney scored again, but the Red Dragons scored in the final minute of the half to tie the game for a second time.

The Knights wouldn't let the second quarter's shift in momentum last beyond the break, as Geiger scored unassisted just 37 seconds after the third period's opening faceoff. However, that quick goal also wouldn't turn into a significant advantage for Clarkson either, as the two teams traded goals for much of the quarter. It wasn't until the 3:09 mark that Clarkson regained its two-goal advantage when Pierce Currie scored off a pass from Geiger, but even that was short-lived as Cortland tallied at the tail end of a man-up opportunity as Zak Jones converted for the Red Dragons with 1:17 left in the quarter to make the score 8-7.

Cortland began the fourth quarter with two goals in the first 75 seconds, putting the Red Dragons up for the first time in the contest and the host team would never trail again, though the Knights would certainly put a scare into the Red Dragons. Cortland held possession for the next few minutes until the team was called for a cross-check, allowing the Knights to play a man-up. One shot was stopped by Cortland goalkeeper Marc Esposito, but the Dragons failed on the clear and the Knights quickly reset to tie the game again when Geiger found Penny about six yards out at 11:05, making the score 9-9. Cortland took the lead for good thanks to a solid play from Jacob Rivers less than four minutes later, as the defenseman gathered up a groundball off a save by Esposito and sprinted the length of the field before bouncing a shot in at 7:29.

Clarkson had opportunities down the stretch to tie the game, but Esposito made three big saves in the final three minutes, including point-blank shots from Pierce Currie and Bryan Penney. Following a clear after the save on Penney's shot, Zak Jones gave the Dragons extra cushion with a goal at the 1:31 mark. In the final minute, the Knights ripped four more shots near the Cortland cage, but three went wide and one Conor Bartlett attempt was saved as the Dragons survived the late rush from the Knights.

Geiger had five points to lead the Knights while Bryan Penney continued his scoring streak with four goals while also adding in four groundballs. Bartlett added a pair of assists while both Jay Considine and Pierce Currie each scored a goal. Max Hoffer grabbed six groundballs and Matt Szwagulinski also contributed five groundballs. Kevin Dyckman stopped 13 shots in the Clarkson crease.

For Cortland, Esposito played a key role for the Red Dragons, making 16 saves. Zak Jones scored five points with four goals and one assist, while seven other players scored one goal.
