Knights Nipped by 23rd-Ranked Cortland, 12-11

Potsdam, NY – Despite a late rally that had player scrambling for possession in the final minute, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team fell to 23rd-ranked SUNY Cortland by a score of 12-11 on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The loss put the Golden Knights at 1-2 on the season while the Red Dragons picked up their first win of the season. Clarkson opens up Liberty League play next weekend at Vassar College.

The Green and Gold trailed by three with a little over four minutes remaining, but late goals from Julia Lavarnway and Sydney Roderick pulled the Knights back to within one. Clarkson won the ensuing draw but was unable to put any pressure in the Red Dragons end as Cortland was able to gain possession in the final 30 seconds and then spread the field to play keep-away from the Clarkson defenders.

Clarkson opened strong with a three-goal lead in less than five minutes, but the Red Dragons responded a few minutes later to break the ice on the offensive end, tallying twice in less than 30 seconds. The Knights regained a three-goal advantage shortly thereafter, but Cortland ended the half on a 4-0 run, including an unassisted goal from Kiki Meager off a free-position shot with just 19 seconds left in the half.

Cortland would never trail again after claiming the lead late in the first period, but Clarkson kept things close in the opening portion of the second half. Eventually, the Red Dragons would build up a four-goal lead with three unanswered markers midway through the half, but the Knights got back into the game with unassisted goals from Grace Hagberg and Madelynn Barnum. Neither team scored for close to 11 minutes before Cortland tallied what would prove to be the game-winning goal at the 4:24 mark when Cecilia Procopio found Hannah Keech on the doorstep of the Clarkson crease.

Clarkson out shot Cortland 29-25 and held an advantage in shots on goal (25-19). The Knights also won the battle of draws by a wide margin (19-6) but Cortland edged out the Knights in groundballs (25-20).

Barnum finished with three goals and nine draw controls while Hagberg also chipped in three goals, three groundballs, and three draws. Sydney Roderick had three points with a pair of goals and an assist and also produced four groundballs and caused three turnovers. Julia Lavarnway added three points thanks to a goal and two assists, and Kyrsten Stone had a pair of goals as well as three groundballs and four caused turnovers. Emily Fischer made seven saves for the Knights.

For Cortland, Procopio had six points on two goals and four assists while both Hannah Lorenzen and Hannah Keech had three goals. Kayla Petre added five groundballs and four caused turnovers and Amanda Squillini also caused four turnovers. Paige Potter stopped 14 shots in the Cortland crease.
