Knights Busy on Offensive Glass, Pick Up First Win of 2021-22 over NVU-Lyndon

Potsdam, NY – Thanks to a flurry of second chances on offensive rebounds in the second half, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team came from behind to claim an 84-79 victory over Northern Vermont University-Lyndon on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights closed out the first semester with a victory in their first home game of 2021-22, improving to 1-7, while NVU-Lyndon fell to 2-8. Clarkson will be back in action in three weeks when the team hosts Plattsburgh State on January 3rd.

At the start of the game, the Hornets jumped out to a quick lead with baskets on their first two possessions, but Clarkson came back quickly to take the lead. The two teams traded baskets and the game remained close until Chris Hulbert hit back-to-back 3-pointers midway through the half to put the Knights up 23-20. Clarkson would remain up for most of the remainder of the first half, extending its lead to as many as seven with five minutes to go. However, the Hornets rode the hot hand of Luke Fredsell to keep things close and trailed by just one at the break.

The contest would remain close at the start of the second, but a 12-2 run by the Hornets near the halfway point of the period gave the visitors a seven-point advantage (69-62). Clarkson rallied back with a 7-0 run to tie the game, and the Knights then utilized second chances to change the game. Ryan Miles-Ferguson grabbed an offensive rebound off his own miss and found Joe Lucas in the corner for a game-tying 3-pointer at 1:46, and with under a minute to go, Blake Gearhart snagged a miss off a layup and converted on the put back to give Clarkson a two-point lead. Hulbert then converted three free throws on four attempts down the stretch to give the Knights a five-point margin of victory.

Hulbert finished with 24 and Gearhart ended up with 18 points to lead the Knights. Dante Joefield was everywhere underneath the basket, as the 5-9 guard ended up with eight offensive rebounds and 13 overall to give him a double-double thanks to 10 points. Ryan Miles-Ferguson also had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, with nine of his caroms coming at the defensive end. Joe Lucas also chipped in 11 points for the Knights.

For NVU-Lyndon, Luke Fredsell came off the bench to score 19, shooting 5-for-7 from beyond the 3-point arc, and also found his teammates for five assists. Zach Falkenberg and Aiden Trapani each scored 14, and Antonio Carlisle kicked in 12 points and four assists for the Hornets.
