Knights Fall to Crosstown Rival SUNY Potsdam, 68-53

Potsdam, NY – Despite a late surge by the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team in the fourth quarter, the Golden Knights dropped a 68-53 decision to crosstown rival SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 0-3 on the season while Potsdam improved to 3-1. Clarkson is scheduled to take on SUNY Canton next Tuesday before the Thanksgiving break.

Potsdam jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first two minutes only to see that advantage evaporate in the next few moments as the Knights took the lead on a Likhita Chanda jumper at 5:31. The two teams jostled back and forth for the next couple minutes, and the Knights again took the lead on a mid-range shot from Mariah Benavides at 3:03. However, Mandy Barnell hit a 3-pointer at 2:44 for the Bears, sparking an 11-0 run to end the quarter.

The second quarter saw Potsdam's lead waver slightly as Chanda hit a 3-pointer at the seven-minute mark, but the Bears went on a 15-2 run capped by a Xy'El Bradford make at 2:21, putting Potsdam up 42-22.

In the third quarter, Potsdam continued to slowly increase their lead and eventually led by as many as 28 in the fourth. Clarkson slowly began to edge its way back into the contest thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers from Mariah Benavides and a pair of steals and fast break lay ins from Ruthie Nolan and Lauren Bell. That would be the end of the scoring, though, as Potsdam slowed the game down and neither team produced any more offense.

Likhita Chanda led the Golden Knights with 10 points, while Elaina Porter and Mariah Benavides each added eight points. Porter also chipped in seven rebounds and Benavides added three steals.

Potsdam's Mandy Barnell led all scorers with 15 points, going 7-for-10 from the floor. Xy'El Bradford was 5-for-8 from the field, adding in 14 points. Caroline LaFountain had a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds and Alyson Crosby tossed in 11 points for the Bears.
