Fifth-Ranked RIT downs Golden Knights in Liberty League Opener

Rochester, NY – After scoring 37 goals in its first two games of the season, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team was held mostly in check against fifth-ranked RIT, as the Tigers downed the Golden Knights 18-6 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights suffered their first loss of the season to fall to 2-1 on the year, but they will try to get back on the winning track on Tuesday when they host Oswego State. RIT remained unbeaten at 4-0.

The Tigers scored seven goals in the first quarter and then six more in the second period to take a 13-0 lead at the half, outshooting Clarkson 29-13 overall and 21-9 in shots on the cage. The Tigers also had a 21-8 edge in groundballs.

Clarkson got on the scoreboard to end its scoreless streak when Tanner Cioffi tallied in the first two minutes. The Knights actually ended up with a 4-3 edge in the third quarter and were even in the fourth at 2-2.

Conor Bartlett scored twice and added an assist for three points while no other players for the Knights scored more than one point in the game. Riley Holzman notched a goal and added four groundballs, going 11-for-24 on faceoffs. KJ Sarni tied for the team lead with four groundballs while Trevor Borchardt picked up three groundballs. Kevin Dyckman made 14 saves between the posts for the Knights.

Dawson Tait scored seven of his eight points in the first half, notching six goals and two assists in the game. Spencer Bell added five points on three goals and two assists and also had three groundballs. Quinn Commandant also produced four points on two goals and two assists. Nick Montemorano went 10-for-18 on faceoffs, picking up eight groundballs. Walker Hare made 11 saves in the first three period and Drew Hutchison closed things out with five saves in the fourth.

RIT finished with positive margins in shots (45-35), shots on goal (32-22), groundballs (38-29), and faceoffs (17-11).
