Fischer Stops Eight Shots in Clarkson's 9-5 Win Over Oswego State

Oswego, NY – A year ago, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team had trouble getting shots past Oswego State's goalkeeper Elianna Sanchez in a two-goal loss. That was the case again on Wednesday, but this time the Golden Knights' defense did its part in limiting Oswego's offense in a 9-5 victory over the Lakers.

The Golden Knights moved to 2-0 on the season while the Lakers fell to 1-2. Clarkson will play host on Saturday when the Green and Gold take on SUNY Geneseo at 12:00 noon on Hantz Field.

Oswego scored the first goal of the game less than three minutes in, but that was the only tally the Lakers would muster for the entire first half as Clarkson goalkeeper Emily Fischer was up to the task with four first half saves and the rest of the Green and Gold defense forced Oswego's shots off target. At the other end, sophomore Sydney Roderick found a favorite target of the day in Aubrey Borgesi, locating the senior midfielder three times in a stretch of 12:35 to give the Knights a 3-1 lead. Late in the half, Lexi Smith notched a score to put the Knights up 4-1 at the break. Besides the scoreboard, Clarkson only led Oswego in shots on goal at the half (8-5), trailing in shots overall (11-9), draws (4-2), and groundballs (5-4).

The Lakers appeared to have solved Clarkson's defense in the early going of the second half as Montana Garrett notched a score for Oswego just 93 seconds into the half, but again Clarkson clamped down with a strong defensive effort, allowing only three shots in the next dozen minutes. The Knights were equally muzzled, with only Roderick finding the back of the net at 22:49 to return the margin to three goals at 5-2. Oswego briefly challenged the Knights again midway through the period with another goal by Beck, but Clarkson responded with two goals just 62 seconds apart from Katie Sergeant and Julia Lavarnway to push the lead back to four. Two-plus minutes later, Lexi Smith converted from a few meters away at the 11:17 mark to give the Knights their biggest lead of the game at five (8-3).

Following the eighth goal by the Knights, Oswego controlled possession of the ball as Clarkson struggled to get out of its own end, turning the ball over and allowing the Lakers multiple chances to get back into the game. Oswego took advantage, scoring twice in a span of 90 seconds with just under six minutes to play to get back into the game, 8-5. After a timeout, Clarkson put together two solid possessions, with the second one results in a free-position goal by Abby Collins at 2:45, which pretty much put the game away, considered the Lakers' stunted offense.

Emily Fischer finished with eight saves for the Knights, while Roderick had five points on a goal and four assists. Borgesi scored three goals and Lexi Smith had three points on two goals and an assist. Collins and Borgesi each earned three draws for the Knights. For Oswego, Montana Garrett had three goals and Molly Beck had two scores. Elianna Sanchez ended up with seven saves.

Oswego had a modest 21-20 lead in shots, though Clarkson held the advantage in shots on goal at 16-13. Clarkson also won the battle of draws at 10-6, though Oswego produced 16 groundballs to the Knights' nine.
