Knights Come Up Short at Skidmore

Saratoga Springs, NY – A rough run from beyond the 3-point arc combined with a shorter than usual bench doomed the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team on Saturday afternoon as the Golden Knights dropped a 66-40 decision to Skidmore College in Liberty League action.

The Golden Knights fell to 7-15 overall and 3-13 in the Liberty League, while Skidmore edged up to 6-17 and 4-12. Clarkson will close out its regular season at home next weekend, hosting Rensselaer and Union.

Clarkson shot just 3-for-21 from long range on Saturday, with all of the makes coming from the hands of Mariah Benavides. Skidmore wasn't much better with just four 3-pointers, but the Thoroughbreds held a significant advantage on the glass and shot 45.6% from the floor overall.

The lone lead of the game for the Knights came in the early going when Benavides hit a 3-pointer at the 8:40 mark of the first period, but Skidmore responded with a 12-0 run over the next four and a half minutes to take a double digit lead, 16-5. The Knights regrouped thanks to a 3-pointer from Benavides at the 1:12 mark to get back within seven, but that margin would prove to be the closest that Clarkson would get for the remainder of the contest.

At the start of the second quarter, Maddie Pratt scored in the paint at 8:37 to make it 21-14, but that would be the last basket for more than six minutes. Fortunately for the Knights, Skidmore was fairly quiet in the quarter as well and the Knights found themselves down by 10 at the break thanks to a pair of baskets from Benavides and Hannah Earl late in the period.

The third quarter saw the Knights struggle offensively at the start, scoring only a free throw in the first five minutes of the period as Skidmore extended its advantage to 20 points. Clarkson seemed to get a spark once Hannah Earl hit a pair of free throws at the 4:43 mark as the Knights tallied 13 points over the last five minutes of the period to edge back within 16 through 30 minutes. However, another dry spell on offense at the beginning of the fourth ended any hope of a comeback.

Benavides finished with 14 points, shooting 5-for-8 overall and 3-for-5 from beyond the 3-point arc. Fellow freshman Elaina Porter tossed in eight points on 4-for-6 shooting, and sophomore Maddie Pratt scored seven points while grabbing six rebounds.

For Skidmore, all five starters finished in double figures. Kate McCarney produced all 13 of her points in the second half and enjoyed a solid all-around game with nine rebounds and seven assists. Jessica Centore scored 13, Lilly Berg had a double-double on 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Clare Driscoll and Maddie Hastings added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
