Big Third Quarter Sends Ithaca Past Clarkson, 77-63

Potsdam, NY – A big third quarter by Ithaca College allowed the Bombers to pull away from the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team in the second half as the Golden Knights dropped a 77-63 Liberty League decision Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell back below .500 at 6-7 overall and moved to 2-5 in conference games, while Ithaca improved to 9-4 and 6-1. Clarkson hosts RIT and William Smith next weekend.

Ithaca outscored Clarkson 26-13 in the third quarter, shooting 66.7% (10-for-15) from the floor, to turn a single-digit advantage at the half into a 20-plus point lead through three periods.

Clarkson led by a modest one point early on, but Ithaca went on a 10-2 run over the next few minutes, forcing the Knights to take a timeout after Alex Heuwetter buried a 3-pointer. Clarkson chipped away at the deficit and eventually reclaimed the lead on a step back jumper from Rachel Marion, making the score 19-18 with 52 seconds to go, but Ithaca went back ahead on a layup from Abbi Field on the Bombers' final possession of the quarter.

Back-to-back 3-pointers in the early moments of the second quarter from Megan Yawman and KellyAnne O'Reilly put Ithaca up by six, but Clarkson stayed close as the two teams exchanged baskets for much of the period. It wasn't until late in the half that Ithaca extended its advantage to nine when Cassidy O'Malley converted inside, giving the Bombers their largest lead of the game up to that point.

At the break, Rachel Marion had eight points and five rebounds, shooting 4-for-7 from the floor, and Hannah Earl and Emma Buonanno each tossed in seven points.  Cassidy O'Malley produced nine points with a pair of blocked shots to lead Ithaca. The Bombers kept Clarkson's shooting percentage low (37.9%) thanks to seven blocked shots.

The third period opened with two 3-pointers from Megan Yawman as Ithaca quickly pushed its advantage to double figures and never looked back. A 16-3 run to open the quarter gave the Bombers a 22-point advantage. In the fourth, that lead eventually swelled to as many as 26, but the Knights did not give up and kept the defensive pressure up, clawing back late to get within 14 points.

Emma Buonanno finished with a career-high 22 points, shooting 9-for-13 from the floor, to go along with four rebounds and four steals. Rachel Marion finished with 11 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals. For Ithaca, 11 different player scored, led by Cassidy O'Malley's 13 points. Megan Yawman also finished in double figures with 12 points, shooting 4-for-5 from the floor and a flawless 3-for-3 from beyond the 3-point arc.
