Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Clarkson Women Fall in Opening Game of 2020

The New Year certainly did not start well for Clarkson as the Golden Knights suffered their first loss since late November and only their third defeat of the season, falling to Yale 5-2 in ECAC Hockey action in New Haven, CT on Friday night.

The 5/6th-ranked Golden Knights, who were playing for the first time in 33 days, stand at 14-3-4 overall and hold down fourth place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 5-2-2 league mark. Clarkson plays at Brown on Saturday, beginning at 3:00 p.m.

The Green and Gold started strong at Ingalls Rink as senior Kayla Friesen (Winnipeg, MAN) opened the scoring with her eighth goal of the season at 13:01, knocking in a rebound off a shot from the point by freshman defenseman Emily Wisnewski (Plymouth, MN). Senior Assistant captain Taylor Turnquist (Blaine, MN) also assisted.

Yale, however, took control scoring five of the next six goals, to gain their second consecutive win over Clarkson in New Haven.

The Bulldogs began their offensive roll with 14 seconds left in the first on a goal by Rebecca Vanstone.

The home team went in front with a power-play tally by Sophie Veronneau at 2:15 of the middle frame.

Freshman Gabrielle David, the NCAA's leading rookie point producer, tied the game with her eighth goal of the year, a power-play marker at 9:31. Friesen and junior Elizabeth Giguere (Quebec City, QUE) assisted.

It was all Yale after that as the Bulldogs added three goals to close out the victory.

Charlotte Welch netted the game-winner at 11:35 of the second for a 3-2 Yale lead through 40 minutes.

Elle Hartje made it 4-2 at 3:02 of the third and Clair Dalton sealed the win with an empty-net score at 18:31.

Clarkson held a slim 22-21 shot advantage. The Knights went 1-of-4 on the power play, while the Bulldogs went 1-of-2.

Sophomore Marie-Pier Coulombe (Carignan, QUE) made 16 saves in the Clarkson crease.
