On Monday evening, the Clarkson University Athletic Department celebrated the accomplishments of its student-athletes with the 17th annual Athletic Awards Ceremony.

The Ed Sayer Memorial Award, an honor that recognizes an individual that exemplifies the former Clarkson swimmer's spirit in exhibiting compassion for their teammates, an indelible work ethic, a passion for their sport, and an appreciation of the intricacies and importance of teamwork, went to senior men's swimmer Gavin Lopata. Lopata played an integral part of in making the transition between former head coach Mick Maguire and first-year head coach Zack Wahl, taking on a considerable leadership role. Not only was he a leader in the pool as a part of four record-breaking relays and an individual mark in the 100 freestyle, he embraced the changes of Coach Wahl and helped guide his teammates as well. He was constantly the hardest worker in the pool for workouts at practice and would help motivate others to get them to put in teh effort needed to be successful, showing a positive attitude towards adversity in situations where others would become discouraged. Lopata will be the program's graduate assistant coach in 2019-20.
