Knights Fall in Liberty League Regular Season Finale

Potsdam, NY – With nine goals in the first 20-plus minutes, Ithaca jumped out to a lead from which the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team could not overcome as the Golden Knights dropped a 17-5 decision to the Bombers Wednesday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights closed out the regular season with a record of 8-7 overall and 3-5 in the Liberty League, while Ithaca improved to 9-6 and 5-3. Clarkson gained the sixth-seed in the Liberty League Tournament and will face Rensselaer in the first round of the conference playoffs on Saturday.

Ithaca took advantage of a lethargic start by the Golden Knights, putting up four goals in the first seven minutes of the game. Billy Bergan got the Knights on the board when he ripped a shot past Connor Thornton at the 3:53 mark, but Ithaca put up five more goals over the next nine minutes to take a 9-1 lead midway through the second quarter. Bryan Penney stopped the run at the 9:08 mark for the Knights; however, the Bombers were far from finished.

Ithaca scored three times in the third and four times early in the fourth to take a 17-2 lead. When the Knights finally got things going in the fourth quarter on goals from Marcus Lavarnway, Bergan and Evan Burgett, the lead was far too much to overcome.

The two teams were fairly even in shots (41-39) and shots on goal (23-18) with Ithaca holding small advantages, but the Bombers won 17 of 25 faceoffs and held a 41-26 edge in groundballs.

Billy Bergan scored two goals and Marcus Lavarnway had a goal and an assist for the Knights. Bryan Penney and Evan Burgett accounted for the other points for the Knights. Liam St. Croix recorded four groundballs and three caused turnovers and freshman goalkeeper Matt Yonko made six saves in 36 minutes, 35 seconds worth of action in the Clarkson crease.

For Ithaca, Josh Della Puca produced six points on four goals and two assists and Ryan Ozsvath added five points with four goals and one helper. Owen Smith also tossed in four points with three goals and one assist. Brendan King scooped up a game-high seven groundballs while Sean Seaberg added five groundballs and two caused turnovers. Connor Thornton played well in the Ithaca net, making 12 saves on 16 shots on goal
