Knights Split With Rochester, Zoeller Whiffs 11 in Opener

Potsdam, NY – Sophomore Riley LeBourveau homered and Olivia Zoeller tossed a complete-game shutout in the opener, as the Clarkson University Softball team split its Sunday doubleheader against Rochester with a 1-0 victory in game one and a 6-3 defeat in the nightcap.

The Golden Knights won their 23rd game of the year, setting a new mark for wins in a season for the six-year-old program. Clarkson moved to 23-13 overall and 7-5 in the Liberty League while the Yellowjackets saw their record go to 16-14 and 6-4. Clarkson closes out the conference season next weekend with a two-game set against Skidmore, while Rochester has four conference games remaining on its slate.

Zoeller was tough from the start, striking out at least one hitter in all seven innings, including the side in the top of the third. She scattered three hits and allowed one walk in the game while whiffing 11 hitters.

Although Clarkson left 10 runners on base and had several chances with runners in scoring position, the Knights would get all they would need for Zoeller in the bottom of the fourth. After a pop up and a line out, LeBourveau stepped to the plate with two down. She then ripped a fly ball right down the left field line and it soared just inside the foul pole for a solo home run. Zoeller gave up soft hits in the fifth and sixth but induced two pop ups in the seventh before striking out the final hitter of the game to claim the win.

In game two, the Knights came out with Zoeller again, but this time Rochester had her better timed, producing four hits in three innings. Harleigh Kaczegowicz hit a solo homer in the second to put Rochester up 1-0 and Alizah Ayon hit a two-run shot to right-center in the third, though both of those runs were unearned due to an error earlier in the inning. An infield single allowed another run to cross in the fourth, putting the Yellowjackets up 4-0 at the midway point of the game.

Leading off the bottom of the fourth, freshman Sarah Vaccaro delivered her third home run of the season for the Knights to make the score 4-1, but Rochester was able to tack on two runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run single to left-center by Sammi Re.

Clarkson did not go quietly in the bottom of the seventh, though. Kayla Robert reached on an error and Raeanna doubled delivered a one-out double to left-center to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Danielle Whitham then produced an infield single to plate Robert, though Dunn had to remain at second. It mattered little when Liz Caggiano singled to center to plate Dunn from the keystone base, but Elizabeth Bourne was able to wiggle out of the jam with a ground out and a pop up to end the game.

Hannah Leahy went 6.1 innings to gain the win, allowing seven hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Zoeller took the loss with her three innings of work to start the second contest.
