Knights Split with RIT for Second Straight Day

Potsdam, NY – For the second straight day RIT and the Clarkson University Baseball team split a doubleheader with the Tigers claiming game one on a walk-off, 6-3, and the Golden Knights outlasting the visitors in a slugfest, 14-9, Sunday afternoon at Jack Phillips Stadium.

The Golden Knights moved to 13-11 overall on the season and improved to 9-3 in conference play while the Tigers saw their record go to 12-12 and 7-5 in league games. Clarkson faces SUNY Canton midweek and hosts Bard College on Friday and Saturday.

Each team pushed a run across in the first inning. As the away team on day two's doubleheader, Clarkson got on the scoreboard first. Mike Tito led off with a single through the left side and then moved upon a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, an error on the shortstop allowed Michael Mieczkowski to reach and put runners on the corners and another error on a hard hit ball through the first baseman's legs allowed Tito to score. RIT responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning as Daniel Capra ran through the stop sign at third base to score on a one-out single by Joey Mylott.

The two teams exchanged zeroes for the next three innings before Clarkson went up by two in the top of the fifth. Nolan Duda reached on an error with two outs allowing Brad Pearson to come to the plate and the senior delivered, hitting a towering home run to right to make the score 3-1. However, the Tigers once again had an answer in the bottom half of the inning. A two-out error gave RIT life and a single up the middle put two on, setting up Daniel Zeglen's double that just blooped inside the right field line to score both runners.

Clarkson put runners in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh innings, but it was RIT that would push the final runs across. Navada Waterman opened the bottom of the seventh with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Joey Mylott then was given an intentional pass to set up a force play, but Zeglen struck out swinging for the second out. Patrick Blackall fell behind in the count 0-2, but then hit a line drive over the left-center wall to plate all the two runners and himself for a 6-3 RIT win.

Neither starter figured in the decision as reliever Jon Opalewski picked up the win with a scoreless seventh and Mark Connor took the loss, pitching two scoreless frames before the walk-off hit.

In game two, the Knights quickly put three up on the scoreboard as Mike Tito, Brad Pearson, and Michael Mieczkowski each doubled and Mike Nee singled to make it 3-0. RIT responded with a run in the bottom of the first on a Patrick Blackall two-out single to plate Daniel Capra. Clarkson added to its total in the second with Tito singling home Stockman, but the Tigers matched the output when Ian Libby doubled in a run in the bottom of the frame. Clarkson kept the pressure on, scoring in the top of the third as Stockman was hit by a pitch to force home a run and the Knights tacked on two more in the fifth, but the Tigers also plated three in the bottom of the inning with three straight run-scoring hits from Blackall, Patrick Mylott and Kyle Watson.

The offense continued to find holes with Clarkson and RIT each scoring in the sixth, but in the eighth the Tigers finished their comeback and tied the game at 8-8 on a two-run triple by Blackall.

Clarkson was ready to play for one in the ninth with Mike Messier singling on a bunt and then moving up a base on a sacrifice by Caleb Doyle, but the hits kept coming for Clarkson. With the bases loaded, the Tigers brought a fifth infielder in to try and cut down a run at the plate, but Mike Nee singled through the right side to make it 10-8. With the fifth infielder shifted to the right side with Nolan Duda up, the senior doubled off the fence in deep left to clear the bases, and he later came around on a wild pitch. The Tigers picked up one in the ninth, but Glenn Stever struck out a pair and ended the game by inducing a fly out.

The two teams combined for 34 hits in game two, with Tito (3-for-5), Caleb Doyle (2-for-6), Pearson (3-for-6), Nee (3-for-5), Duda (2-for-5) and Sean Gill (2-for-4) each recording multiple hits. Ryan Riley gained the win in relief pitching 2.1 innings later before Stever closed the game out in the ninth.
