Knights Bury 14 3-Pointers in Win Over Saints

Potsdam, NY – A 24-point fourth quarter, which included four well-timed 3-pointers, lifted the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team to a 64-48 win over St. Lawrence University Tuesday night at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Golden Knights improved to 7-13 overall and 4-9 in the Liberty League, while the Saints fell to 7-14 overall and 4-10 in conference games. Clarkson will close out its home schedule this weekend when it takes on Ithaca College and Union College.

The Golden Knights buried 14 3-pointers in the game overall, their second-highest total of the season. The two teams were knotted up at 40-40 through three quarters, but the Knights shot 71.4% (10-for-14) in the fourth while the Saints made just three of 10 attempts in the final 10 minutes of the game.

In the opening minutes of the contest, it was all St. Lawrence, as the Saints jumped out to a 7-0 lead and led 13-3 at the midway point of the quarter. Carly Assimon hit a 3-pointer to get the Clarkson offense going, but the Knights still trailed by eight (18-10) after 10 minutes.

Molly Stewart hit a pair of 3-pointer in the first 90 seconds of the second quarter to get Clarkson back within striking distance, but St. Lawrence expanded its lead back to six just a few minutes later. It was then Rachel Marion's turn to hit two straight 3-pointers for the Knights to tie the game at 22-22, and another 3-pointer from Assimon gave Clarkson its first lead of the game. St. Lawrence, however, finished the half with a one-point lead.

At the start of the third quarter, Assimon hit a 3-pointer to give Clarkson the lead and the Knights would never trail again. Marion hit another 3-pointer to put Clarkson up by six, but the Saints rallied to tie the game at 35-35. Again, Clarkson led by five (40-35), only to see the Saints rally to tie the game at 40-40 through three quarters.

Although it appeared the game might come down to the wire, Clarkson owned the fourth quarter with 24 points while allowing just eight. Clarkson scored the first nine points of the period and always hit a 3-pointer when it needed to, assuring that the Saints would not come back. Hannah Earl hit a 3-pointer midway through the fourth to give Clarkson a 12-point edge, and with a little over three minutes to go Molly Stewart hit a 3-pointer from the wing to make the score 61-47. Another 3-pointer from Stewart just 40 seconds later iced the game for the Green and Gold.

Molly Stewart finished with a game-high 19 points, making five 3-pointer field goals, while adding in seven rebounds. Carly Assimon added 14 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists, making four 3-pointers of her own. Rachel Marion also hit three 3-pointers for 11 points and Hannah Earl tossed in 12 points, adding in five assists. For St. Lawrence, Annabella Pugliese scored 11 points and Katie Frederick added seven points and 11 rebounds.
