Knights Score Twice in Second Half to Beat Plattsburgh, 2-1

Potsdam, NY – Two second-half goals allowed the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team to end a modest two-game losing streak as the Golden Knights picked up a 2-1 come-from-behind victory against Plattsburgh State Tuesday night at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 8-3-1 overall, while the Cardinals fell back to .500 at 5-5-1 on the season. Clarkson will end the regular-season with a streak of conference games, beginning with a road game at Ithaca College on Saturday.

In the early going, it appeared as if the Golden Knights were going to get on the board first with a constant aggressive attack. Sometimes that offense proved too aggressive, however, as the Knights were whistled frequently for offsides, and Clarkson was unable to get its first shot off until the 23:37 mark when Danielle Martin sailed a ball over the top of the Plattsburgh goal.

Despite the pressure that Clarkson was placing upon the Cardinals' defense, it was Plattsburgh that would score first. With a little under 15 minutes remaining in the first half, Katie Matott sent a through ball from the midfield line onto the foot of Kirsten Villemaire, who split the Clarkson defenders and beat Emma Timerman to put the Cardinals on top 1-0 at 30:48.

After coming up empty in the first half, the Golden Knights continued to press the Plattsburgh defense from the very start of the second half. The effort resulted in a goal less than five minutes into the second frame. Clarkson had possession deep in the Plattsburgh end of the field where the Cardinals defense converged on the ball. An attempt at clearing the ball by the Cardinals defense failed, however, as Sarah Kohls stepped up, collected the errant pass, and ripped it past Plattsburgh's Julia Ennis to tie the match up at one apiece.

Clarkson kept the ball in the Plattsburgh end for a significant stretch, but struggled to muster much offense with the ball near the sideline. Eventually, the attack from the right side paid dividends, as Camryn Careccia pushed the ball down that part of the field and edged in towards the Plattsburgh frame. Careccia put the ball on goal and a deflection ended up on the foot of classmate Giulia Mahoney, who finished off the play and put Clarkson up 2-1 at 73:31.

Plattsburgh buckled down late searching for an equalizer but was stopped twice in the last six minutes by freshman goalkeeper Emma Timerman, who sealed the victory for the Golden Knights with some quality play in the waning moments.

Plattsburgh finished with a 9-7 shot advantage, but Clarkson managed to have more shots on goal (4-3). The Golden Knights also held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Emma Timerman, who was making her first career start, stopped two shots to secure her first collegiate win. Julia Ennis made two saves in 81:48 of action. Plattsburgh switched out Julia Ennis for Tina Bedard with 8:12 remaining in the game, but Bedard faced no shots in her limited time.
