Knights Fall 3-0 to Vassar

Potsdam, NY - Two late goals by the opposition took away any chance for a comeback by the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team, as the Golden Knights dropped a 3-0 Liberty League decision to Vassar College Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 9-5-1 on the season and 2-4-0 in conference play, while Vassar edged over .500 at 7-6-1 overall and 4-2-0 in the Liberty League. Clarkson finishes out the regular season on the road, beginning with a game against Rensselaer next Saturday.

Despite a 10-5 edge in shots in the first half, Clarkson was unable to break through on offense in the opening 45 minutes. One of Clarkson's chances at a restart was picked off by Vassar when the free kick was intercepted in the 19th minute, as the Brewers maintained possession in the Clarkson defensive zone. Thanks to some solid passing, the ball ended up on foot of Emma Tanner in the Clarkson box, and she sent a pass over to Savannah Cutler, who buried her attempt for a goal and a 1-0 Vassar lead.

The Golden Knights were unable to generate much offense in the second half as a result of Vassar dominating possession. A corner kick in the 75th minute would give the Brewers some insurance. A Vassar corner ended up right in front of Elyse Green, who initially made the stop, and Giulia Mahoney also denied another attempt, but the packed in players kept Clarkson from clearing the ball and a hard kick deflected off a player in the scrum past Green for an own goal. Less than six minutes later, Emma Tanner iced the game off a feed from Adie Amore.

Vassar finished with a slight advantage in shots (14-13), shots on goal (8-6), and corner kicks (6-4). Elyse Green concluded the contest with five saves, while Fiona Walsh saved six for the shutout.
