Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights' Win Streak Ends With Overtime Loss on the Road

A two-goal rally in the third period at Harvard gave Clarkson University a chance to extend its nation-leading eight-game winning streak, but the Crimson ended the Golden Knights' winning ways with the deciding goal in overtime to hand the Green and Gold a 4-3 loss in Cambridge, MA.

Suffering its first defeat since December 7, Clarkson stands at 16-7 overall and is in a fifth-place tie in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 7-4 league mark. Ranked 9/10th in the national polls entering the weekend, the Knights close out a four-game road trip with a 7:00 p.m. game on Saturday at Dartmouth in Hanover, NH.

The Green and Gold got the scoring started early in the first period at Bright-Landry Hockey Center.  Senior Haralds Egle (Liepaja, Latvia) had the puck in behind the Harvard net when he spotted classmate Nico Sturm (Augsburg, Germany) wide open between the faceoff circles.  Sturm made no mistake as his wrist shot went past the glove of Harvard goaltender Michael Lackey and into the back of the net at 3:51.  The goal for Sturm, his third straight to start a game, was his 12th of the season, giving him points in ten consecutive contests. Sophomore Jack Jacome (Caledon, ONT) also picked up a helper, giving him points in four consecutive skates.

The lead did not last until the intermission, though.  Harvard's Jack Badini rushed the puck into the right-wing circle and slipped a backhand past junior Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN) with 1:44 remaining in the period.  Nathan Krusko and Adam Fox picked up assists on the play.

The Crimson outshot Clarkson 13-7 through the opening 20 minutes.

The lone goals of the middle stanza belonged to Harvard (9-6-3, 6-5-2) as the home team built a 3-1 lead through 40 minutes.  Badini connected for his second goal of the contest on a strong wrist shot past Kielly at 2:10 from the right- wing circle on a two-on-one.  At 12:06 of the period, Henry Bowlby found himself open in the slot and put a shot past Kielly.

Clarkson outshot the Crimson 14-6 in the frame, but trailed by two goals entering the third.

Harvard outshot Clarkson 5-0 to start the third period, but the Green and Gold would rally to tie the game.  Freshman Josh Dunne (O'Fallon, MO) tipped in a pass from junior Devin Brosseau (St. Lambert, QUE) at 9:06. For Dunne, the goal would be his eighth of the campaign.  Brosseau's assist gives him points in five straight and seven of the last nine outings.   Just under five minutes later freshman Anthony Callin (Middleton, WI) tied the game as his pass intended for Sturm hit off a Harvard defenseman and into the back of the net at 13:50.  The goal was Callin's third of the season and second in as many games.

Overtime belonged to the Crimson, though.  Off an icing, Badini won a faceoff clean to the left point where Reilly Walsh was waiting to one-time the puck just inside the post for the game winner at 2:12.

Neither team was whistled for a penalty.  It was the first time since October 31, 2014 a Clarkson opponent did not commit a penalty.  It was also the first time since November 27, 2015 that no Golden Knight was sent to the sin-bin.

Harvard outshot the Knights 41-31.
