Knights Drop Non-League Decision at Middlebury, 59-42

Middlebury, VT – Junior Molly Stewart recorded her fourth 20-point game since winter break, but the effort was not enough for the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team as the Golden Knights dropped a 59-42 decision to Middlebury College Tuesday evening.

The Golden Knights fell to 5-10 overall while the Panthers moved to 16-2 on the season. Clarkson closes out its six-game road trip this weekend when it travels to take on Bard College and Vassar College.

Stewart has reached 20 points or more in four of her last seven games, shooting 8-for-17 from the floor with three 3-pointers on Tuesday. However, the Knights were outrebounded 55-27 in the game, with Middlebury gaining numerous second chance opportunities with 27 offensive boards.

Middlebury took the lead in the first quarter with a 10-2 run that turned a small one-point deficit into a seven-point advantage near the conclusion of the period, but a Molly Stewart 3-pointer with a little over a minute remaining brought the Knights back within four. That would be just a brief reprieve for the Green and Gold, however, as Middlebury opened the second quarter with a 12-2 run that had the Panthers up 26-12. Middlebury had a slow start in the first period, shooting only 5-for-18, but the team was 7-for-12 in the second quarter with four 3-point field goals, allowing the Panthers to expand their lead to 16 by the end of the half (37-21).

Neither team shot particularly well in the third quarter as the Knights were unable to make up any ground with just seven points in the period. Middlebury expanded its advantage to as many as 24 points in the early moments of the fourth quarter before Clarkson got back on track from beyond the arc, shooting 3-for-5 from distance in the final 10 minutes. However, there wasn't enough time for Clarkson to truly put pressure on the Panthers as the margin was trimmed to as few as 14 before finally settling at 17.

Stewart finished with a game-high 20 points and also contributed six rebounds to Clarkson's effort, while Rachel Marion tossed in 12 points, shooting 4-for-5 from beyond the 3-point arc. For Middlebury, Catherine Harrison posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Emily Wander contributed a team-best 12 points. Betsy Knox (12 rebounds) and Maya Davis (10 rebounds) also contributed to Middlebury's dominance on the glass, while Kira Waldman scored nine points.
