Two Scores in Final 13 Minutes Give Knights 2-1 Win Over Oswego State

Oswego, NY – After a quiet first 77 minutes, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team scored twice in the final 13 to pick up a 2-1 win over Oswego State in non-league action Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights moved to 3-1-1 on the season and will face Utica College on Saturday afternoon. Oswego State suffered its first loss of the year, dropping to 3-1-0. The win for Clarkson was its first against the Lakers since 2003, ending an eight-game winless streak.

Although the first half finished scoreless, the Golden Knights enjoyed some chances both early and late in the half. A corner kick from Emma Harrigan near the 11-minute mark found Giulia Mahoney in front, but the junior's header hit the post. In the final eight minutes of the half, Clarkson produced two shots and a corner kick but still came up empty.

Oswego, which trailed 9-5 in the first half in shots, pushed the tempo a little in the second half and nearly evened the shots up, but neither team could break through for the first 30 minutes of the period, making it appear as if the two teams would be knotted up at 0-0 and headed to overtime. However, a miscue on the defensive end by the Lakers allowed Clarkson to take lead late in the 77th minute.  Freshman Hannah Letourneau sent a ball into the box off a corner kick and Oswego goalkeeper Emma Allen jumped up to clear the cross, but she mishandled attempt and the ball ricocheted into the net at 76:59.

The Lakers responded quickly, however, finally beating the Clarkson defense to tie the game at 1-1 in the 84th minute. Aubrey Burbidge crossed the ball to Lyndsey Roth, and the sophomore settled the ball and took a turn to beat a Clarkson defender at 83:43.

It appeared as if the momentum was on the side of the host Lakers, but it was Clarkson that would tally the game-winner just 123 seconds after the tying goal. Junior Giulia Mahoney passed a ball into the middle of the box, finding classmate Camryn Careccia. The junior midfielder then blasted a shot to the lower left corner at 85:46 to put the Knights up 2-1, her first points since the season-opener against Mount St. Vincent. Mahoney's assist marked the fourth time in five games this year that she has tallied a goal or an assist. The score would hold up as Oswego was held without a shot or corner kick chance in the final four-plus minutes.

The Golden Knights finished with a 14-12 edge in shots and a 6-3 advantage in corner kick chances. Elyse Green denied three shots for her fifth win of the year while Emma Allen made three saves for the Lakers.
