Knights Finish Off North Country Classic with 0-0 Tie Against Wentworth

Potsdam, NY – Fresh off a six-goal effort less than 24 hours ago, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team couldn't find pay dirt against Wentworth Institute of Technology, settling for a 0-0 double overtime tie against the Leopards in the second game of the North Country Classic on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights, 1-0-1, will begin a stretch of three games against SUNYAC foes on Tuesday when they travel across town to face SUNY Potsdam at 7:00 pm.

The Leopards doubled up Clarkson in the first half (6-3) on shots, but for the final 65 minutes, the Knights possessed a 16-3 edge in shots.

Just because the game ended in a tie did not mean that both teams were without solid scoring chances, especially late in the game. With just 15:30 remaining, Giulia Mahoney sent a cross into the middle and Camryn Careccia had time to put a good shot on goal, but her header ended up in the arms of Wentworth goalkeeper Christie Fleming. Just three minutes later, Allie Gallion's hard groundball was stopped by Clarkson netminder Elyse Green, and 90 seconds after that Ashley Abel was denied on a hard liner at the other end.

Only a little over a minute into the first overtime it appeared as if Wentworth might come away with the win as a direct kick from Alexis Stickelman, from about 35 yards out, found the head of Gallion in front. Fortunately for the Knights, Green was there to punch the ball over the crossbar and keep things scoreless.

The best chances the rest of the way came from Clarkson, as Abel's hard shot with a left foot went wide with two minutes to go, and shots in the waning moments from Careccia and Alicia Bushey did not quite have enough pace on them to make Christie Fleming too nervous.

Clarkson ended the game with a 19-9 edge in shots and a 4-2 lead in corner kicks. Elyse Green recorded her first solo shutout of the year by stopping four shots, while Fleming denied nine to gain a shutout for the Leopards. The shutout for Green was the ninth in her collegiate career, placing her in a tie for fifth on Clarkson's all-time list.
