Knights Come Up Short in 1-0 Loss at Plattsburgh

Plattsburgh, NY – Although several quality chances emerged in the second half, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team came up short in its come-from-behind attempt against Plattsburgh State, dropping a 1-0 decision to the Cardinals in non-league action Monday night.

The Golden Knights fell to 4-6-1 overall and will next be in action this Saturday when the Green and Gold host William Smith. Plattsburgh State jumped back over .500 at 6-5-0 this year.

The Cardinals lone goal of the game seemingly came out of nowhere midway through the first half. About halfway in the Plattsburgh defensive end, Sarah Bonner threw a ball up about 15 yards to the midfield where Kirsten Villemaire controlled it off her ankle and settled it off her chest. She then dropped the ball back down her foot and blindly passed the ball forward where she found Katie Matott with a one-on-one. Matott won the foot race and then carried the ball near the left corner of the penalty box where she chipped a shot over Elyse Green into the far corner of the net at 25:31.

For the first 10 minutes of the second half, Clarkson carried the play in the Plattsburgh defensive end, but the Golden Knights didn't get much in the way of offensive chances other than a few corner kicks and a blocked shot. Plattsburgh then picked up its play but did nothing but shoot the ball off the frame for the next five minutes. Down the stretch the Knights had a few chances with Alicia Bushey's attempt getting corralled by Plattsburgh keeper Taylor Adams (74th minute) and Ashley Abel's scoring chance from the side being denied as well (85th minute). However, the best chance came with less than five minutes to go when Giulia Mahoney outmaneuvered a few Plattsburgh defenders and nearly got a shot off from just a few feet away, ending in a Clarkson corner kick that eventually was cleared away.

Plattsburgh finished with an 18-9 edge in shots, though the Cardinals had just a 7-5 lead in shots on goal. Clarkson held a modest 6-4 advantage in corner kick chances. Elyse Green made six stops for the Golden Knights, and Adams made five denials for Plattsburgh State.
