Knights Open Cross Country Season with Third Place Finishes in Plattsburgh

Plattsburgh, NY – Seniors AJ Beers and Abigail Sullivan each finished in the top 10 to pace the Clarkson University Cross Country team's contingent at the Kinetic Running Cardinal Classic held in Plattsburgh State's Rugar Woods.

The Golden Knights' men and women both placed third among the four competing teams. Clarkson's women had 73 points, trailing Plattsburgh State (33) and Rensselaer (34) but ahead of Potsdam State (93), while the men scored 76 points, behind Rensselaer (18) and Plattsburgh State (55) but again ahead of Potsdam State (104).

Sullivan finished the 5,000-meter event with a time of 19:52.8 (6:24 average mile) and came in eighth among the 54 collegiate runners, marking the first time that she has led the Knights' women in her two years on the team. Junior Sarah Duclos came in 12th at the event, approximately 14 seconds behind Sullivan in 20:07.0 (6:29 average mile). Sophomore Erika Abrantes followed for Clarkson in 15th place in 20:26.5 and junior Katie Ackner placed 17th with a time of 20:30.4. Christina Tricomi (23rd, 21:17.7) rounded out Clarkson's top five, while Ana Witkowski (25th, 21:24.4) and Hannah Phillips (27th, 21:37.3) were in reserve for the scoring.

In a rare 5,000-meter race for the men, AJ Beers led the Golden Knights by coming in ninth with a time of 16:16.5 (5:15 average mile). Classmates Kris Lizins (13th, 16:25.6) and Jacob Erdman (22nd, 16:44.6) also earned top 25 times among the 70 collegiate racers for Clarkson, while freshman Brandon George came through with a solid collegiate debut, coming in 29th in 16:59.8. Junior Austin Smith finished off the Clarkson top five scoring by coming in 31st in 17:10.7 while Dennis Mooney (34th, 17:17.8) and Paul Moore (36th, 17:19.1) served as extra placements for the Knights.
