Game Recap: Men's Baseball | | April 1, 2017

Clarkson Starts Conference Slate with Split at Rochester

On the first day of the Liberty League schedule, the Clarkson University Baseball team split a doubleheader at the University of Rochester.

In the opening game of the two-game set, the final score was 15-8 in favor of the Yellowjackets, but the contest was much closer than the final score made it appear.

Clarkson took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Brad Pearson walked to open the game, but Rochester retired the next two batters. Cam Bando got the Clarkson rally back on track with a single to left field and then Joe Fraser was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Will Coleman followed Fraser to the plate and with a full count, Coleman held off from swinging and was rewarded with a walk to score the first run of the game. Ben Knauf was next up and although he hit a ground ball to the shortstop, a fielding error allowed Knauf to reach base and another run to come home. The third run of the inning scored when Fraser scampered home on a passed ball.

Rochester chipped away at Clarkson's lead in the second when the Yellowjackets scored a run on a double, a sacrifice bunt, and then a run scoring single. Rochester proceeded to tie the score with two runs in the third thanks to three singles and a Clarkson error.

However, Clarkson regained the lead in the fourth as the Golden Knights scored three more runs. Knauf and Joe Stockman hit back to back singles and then Pearson worked a two out walk to load the bases. Knauf scored on a wild pitch and then Dom Pirro doubled into left center to plate Stockman and Pearson.

Rochester answered with five runs in the bottom half of the fourth to take its first lead. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, the next seven Rochester batters reached base, on six singles and a walk.

Clarkson once again brought the teams level with two runs in the top of the sixth. Stockman started the inning with a single and advanced to second on a Mike Bonk groundout. After a Clarkson strikeout and a Rochester pitching change, Pirro walked to bring up Chris Miller. Miller laced the first pitch he saw down the right field line to score both Stockman and Pirro with Miller ending up on second base.

The tie proved shortlived though, as Rochester broke off the biggest rally of the game to answer Clarkson. The Yellowjackets scored seven runs in the inning on just five hits. Rochester took advantage of a few Golden Knights' miscues as Clarkson had an error, a passed ball, and a wild pitch, as well as two walks in the frame. That rally proved too much for Clarkson as the Golden Knights failed to score in the seventh and final inning.

The second game was much more of a pitcher's duel as Clarkson earned a 5-3 win.

The Green and Gold took the lead in the top of the third inning. Coleman singled up the middle and then stole second base. Pirro moved him to third with a single of his own. Miller then scored Coleman with a double to center field. Pirro scored on a wild pitch two batters later.

Rochester steadily climbed back as the Yellowjackets scored a run in the third, fourth, and fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead.

Clarkson regained the lead in the sixth and the Golden Knights did not relinquish it after that. Zach Riccardi walked in his first at-bat of the game and then a Rochester error put Riccardi and Pearson on base. A sac bunt by Knauf moved the pair to second and third with just one away. Stockman tied the game with a single to score Riccardi followed by Clarkson taking the lead when Pearson scored on another Rochester error. On the same play that Pearson scored, Stockman tried to score as well, but was thrown out at home plate. Clarkson eventually added that insurance run in the top of the eighth as Stockman added another RBI single with Pearson coming around to score.

The bottom of the eighth inning was not comfortable for Clarkson, as Rochester's first two batters singled and the Yellowjackets eventually loaded the bases with just one out. However, Pearson threw down to third base to Mike Messier, causing the Rochester runner to take off for home. Messier then fired back to Pearson who applied the tag to get the out. The next batter popped up to end the threat.

Ryan Riley started the first game on the mound for Clarkson, pitching three and two thirds innings and allowing seven earned runs. Mark Connor relieved him and faced one batter before Nate Burns came in to throw one and two thirds innings. Burns allowed two earned runs and was tagged with the loss. Pirro got the final two outs and allowed four unearned runs. In the second game, Ted Wilson took some pressure off the Clarkson bullpen by throwing eight strong innings, as Wilson allowed just three runs on nine hits and had six strikeouts. Pirro faced two batters in the ninth inning, before Burns came in and got the final three outs to earn his first collegiate save.

Clarkson is now 4-6 on the season and 1-1 in conference while Rochester is 3-5 overall with an identical Liberty League mark. The two teams will meet for two more games on Sunday starting at 12:00 noon.
